Gonzaga used an unbelievable defensive start to bury the Santa Clara Broncos in the game’s first five minutes, leaving no doubt that the Zags would be outright WCC Champions and the seniors would win their final game in the Kennel with ease. For the first time this season Gonzaga is alone atop the WCC conference standings, after a very impressive 88-75 win over St. Mary’s Saturday in Spokane. The much anticipated game did not disappoint, as the Zags avenged an early February loss to the Gaels in Moraga with fantastic play on both ends of the floor in order to continue the program’s championship run and secure the crucial number one seed in next week’s conference tournament. ...Gonzaga used a huge second half to overcome a halftime deficit at the University of Portland and pull away late for a 22 point win, 73-51. San Diego came ready to play Monday and continued to play their slow, deliberate, and defensive style which has sparked their recent winning streak, but Gonzaga was able to grind out the win despite the slow tempo and low scoring final. ...The Zags won their third straight game Saturday night to open a three game road trip with a comfortable 83-63 win over San Francisco.
