Freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel will start this weekend for Washington State. The Cougars play Oregon on Saturday night in Eugene. He'll be the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Cougars since Drew Bledsoe did in 1990. This is a no-brainer to me. I didn't get to watch the USC game live, but my roommate DVR'd the second half (because he knew I'd want to see how good Tuel is). I would rather have Tuel taking the snaps for WSU than anyone else. You can argue that he led a scoring drive against the Trojans' second-team defense, but USC's second-team is better than many schools first-team. Tuel was 14-of-22 for 130 yards last weekend against USC. He also ran the ball 13 times for 34 yards. Tuel's stats are impressive, but it's what you can't see on paper that makes the difference. The entire Cougar team (defense, offense, special teams) seemed more motivated and excited after Tuel entered the ball game (one of the reasons Wazzu was only outscored 7-6 in the final three quarters). The Ducks are pretty good (it seems like they are really bringing things together), but they do allow opponents to move through the air. Oregon gives up an average of 196.5 passing yards per game this year. This could work out really well if Tuel limits his mistakes (which he will make). With that said...I would rather have Tuel play and throw five interceptions than have Marshall Lobbestael leading the charge. It's time to look towards the future and the future is Jeff Tuel. Go Cougs! UPDATE 9/29/09 4:11pm: I never want to sound like I'm celebrating an injury, but this should also help Tuel's cause on Saturday. Oregon cornerback Walter Thurmond will have surgery on his right knee and miss the rest of his senior season. He got injured on the opening kickoff of Saturday's 42-3 victory over California. Thurmond was included on the preseason watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. P.S.
