September 2009 ArchivesFreshman quarterback Jeff Tuel will start this weekend for Washington State. The Cougars play Oregon on Saturday night in Eugene. He'll be the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Cougars since Drew Bledsoe did in 1990. This is a no-brainer to me. I didn't get to watch the USC game live, but my roommate DVR'd the second half (because he knew I'd want to see how good Tuel is). I would rather have Tuel taking the ... Washington State faces a huge test this weekend as they battle 12th ranked USC in Los Angeles. It's the first time the Cougars are truly taking their game on the road this season (the Seattle game is considered a "home" game). All I can say is...this one could get interesting (I can't think of a better word right now). I see USC on the schedule and it strikes instant fear into my heart. Washington State downed SMU in overtime last week...this week they get 12th ranked USC. I'm not saying the Cougars don't stand a chance (Washington proved they were beatable last week), but WSU knows it's a daunting task. In the meantime, WSU is having fun at practice. They seem loose on the field, laughing and joking around. It seems like the upbeat attitude ... Washington State running back James Montgomery will miss the rest of the season after he had surgery for acute compartment surgery (explanation to follow). The surgery was performed by Cougar team physician Dr. Ed Tingstad and will end Montgo... When I looked at the 2009 WSU football schedule, there were two games I thought the Cougars could really win. The first was Hawaii (we know how that ended)...the other was Southern Methodist. Wazzu gets a shot at the Mustangs on Saturday at Martin Stadium. SMU isn't the same team they were a year ago. The Mustangs were one of only a handful of FBS teams with less wins ... For the first time in three years, it's a Wednesday during the football season and I'm not at Washington State football practice (it's pretty depressing actually). That doesn't mean the practice report will be any less exciting than it normally is. The Cougars only have two major injuries to report. Freshman wide receiver Gino Simone (concussion) will not play against Southern Methodist on Saturday. Gino told Chris (both Skyline High S... Washington State head football coach Paul Wulff announced today that Marshall Lobbestael will start at quarterback against SMU on Saturday. If that wasn't a surprise enough, Wulff also told reporters that freshman Jeff Tuel will be prepped to take snaps (maybe as soon as this weekend). I stopped asking that question about three weeks into the season last year and it didn't come back out again until the Apple Cup. When the new season started, I questioned if I'd ever need to ask WSU about winning ball games. I asked them before t... It's Wednesday...that means another Washington State football practice report. Washington State University wide receiver Kevin Norrell was dismissed from the football on Tuesday. The team's unity council (made up of players) made the decision and it was backed by the coaching staff. Norrell was arrested early Sunday morning for driving under the influence, reckless driving, criminal trespassing, and driving without a license. The college football season gets started on the Palouse on Saturday as Washington State opens with a conference showdown against Stanford (it's the first time the Cougs have opened with a Pac-10 foe in nine years). In years past, a game against the Cardinal meant a pretty good chance for a win (Wazzu has taken five of the last eight meetings), but that's just not the case anymore.
