March 2009 ArchivesThe University of Virginia officially announced Tony Bennett as their next head coach today (it's the first time the Cavaliers addressed the situation. Here is the full press release (I highlighted the quotes from UVa and Tony Bennett and the terms of the contract (at the end of the release) if you don't want to read the entire thing): CHARLOTTESVILLE--Tony Bennett, the men's head basketball coach at Washington State Universit... I was just going to update my last blog with all of the information from Jim Sterk's teleconference on Monday night, but there is just too much stuff. That's why I'm writing another individual blog. Sterk started the teleconference by talking about all the details about the last few days. He said that Virginia contacted him on Thursday (not Friday as originally reported by WSU), and then Tony flew to Charlottesville and back on Friday.... It's official...Tony Bennett is no longer the head basketball coach at Washington State University. He's leaving Wazzu for the University of Virginia. Here's how it all shook out... Virginia asked athletic director Jim Sterk for permission to speak with Bennett on Friday. Bennett then informed Sterk and President Elson Floyd about his decision to take the Virginia job this afternoon. Bennett then met with the Cougar players aft... The Washington State men's basketball team isn't done yet. The Cougars were selected to play in the National Invite Tournament (NIT). They are a No. 7 seed (there are eight per region) playing against the No. 2 seed St. Mary's on Tuesday. In his NIT teleconference (I'll have a link for that below), Tony Bennett said that any Cougar fan who thinks the NIT is second rate "needs to get a clue." Obviously, it's not the NCAA tourney, but th... The Washington State men's basketball team was ousted from the Pac-10 Tournament on Thursday night by UCLA. The Bruins led by as many as 19 points, but the Cougs used a late 12-3 run to get within seven with less than a minute to go. The Bruins made their clutch free throws, sending Wazzu home with a 64-53 loss. That means WSU's dreams of making it the NCAA Tournament are over. At 17-15 overall and 8-10 in the conference, Washington St... One down...three to go. The Washington State men's basketball team beat Oregon on Wednesday night in the opening round (play-in game) of the Pac-10 Tournament. Aron Baynes scored 20 points as the Cougars cruised to a 62-40 victory. I don't know if the Ducks are really that bad or if Wazzu is really starting to play that well (it's probably a mix of both). Washington State dominated from beginning to end...and they had a fun tim... Let the madness begin! The Washington State men's basketball team couldn't avoid a play-in game at the Pac-10 Tournament. Their loss to Washington on Saturday meant a seventh place finish in the conference. That means they play the tenth seed, Oregon Ducks to start the tourney on Wednesday. The Cougars (16-14, 8-10) swept the Ducks in the regular season series. Wazzu took the first meeting 74-62 in Eugene on January 17th. WSU t... A lot will be on the line when Washington and Washington State play on Saturday. You can't really write a better script for a rivalry game. It's pretty simple... If the Huskies win, they clinch their first outright conference regular season crown since 1953. If the Cougars win, they clinch the fifth or sixth seed to next week's Pac-10 tournament (avoiding a dreaded play-in game). If Washington State loses...it's... |
