Wazzu falls to Arizona, 66-56

11:23 AM Sat, Jan 31, 2009 |

It looked so promising for a while, but then it turned sour (spoiling my morning and afternoon).

The Washington State men's basketball team was ahead of Arizona 28-23 at halftime on Saturday, but the Wildcats used a 24-2 run midway through the second half (the Cougs were up 39-32 when the run started) and Washington State could never respond. WSU was outscored 43-28 in the second half. Arizona could not miss; shooting 50% after the br...

Arizona Preview

9:25 AM Fri, Jan 30, 2009 |

I'm still trying to figure this team out. They sweep the Oregon schools on the road (my confidence skyrockets), they lose at home to UCLA and USC (my confidence drops), and then they upset No. 14 Arizona State in Tempe (my confidence is bursting through the roof again).

My first thought is...why question it? As long as the Cougs are winning games (whether it's at home or on the road)...I'm happy.

My second thought is...this tea...

Arizona State Preview

8:43 AM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |

What a difference a week makes. I felt great about the Cougars after they swept Oregon and Oregon State, but now I feel like the season is spiraling out of control after losses to UCLA and USC.

Maybe my confidence is shaken because Wazzu plays six of their next eight games on the road. I guess when I really think about it (like I did right now)...maybe that's not such a bad thing. The Cougars are 5-2 (3-1 on an opponents home floor; 2-...

USC Preview

3:00 PM Fri, Jan 23, 2009 |

The Washington State men's basketball team came close against 13th ranked UCLA on Thursday, but couldn't capitalize in the end (why Marcus Capers was taking the last shot still boggles my mind). There's always a quick turnaround in the Pac-10, so the Cougars have to erase the loss and get ready for USC on Saturday.

The Trojans are 12-6 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10. They are coming off a 78-73 loss to Washington on Thursday.

US...

UCLA Preview

1:42 PM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |

It's been a pretty quiet week in Cougar athletics so far, but things are about to heat up on Thursday. That's when UCLA (ranked 13th by the AP; 11th by the coaches) rolls into town to kick-off a tough week for Wazzu.

The Bruins are as good as they usually are. They are 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference (they are coming off an overtime loss to Arizona State on Saturday).

UCLA is led by senior Darren Collison (who passed up ...

Cougars Beat Ducks, 74-62

1:37 PM Sat, Jan 17, 2009 |

There's nothing better than a Pac-10 sweep, especially when it happens on the road. The Washington State men's basketball team slipped past Oregon State in overtime on Thursday...they then took care of business (in a pretty dominating fashion) Saturday against Oregon.

It was a tale of two halves. The Cougars led 24-17 at the half...then both teams exploded after the break. Washington State scored 50 points; Oregon scored 45. Every time...

One down and one more to go...

Washington State kicked off its Oregon road trip with an overtime victory against the Beavers on Thursday. Now, they play in "The Pit" against the Ducks.

Oregon is having down year. They are just 6-11 overall; 0-5 in the Pac-10 (they lost to Washington on Thursday, 84-67. "The Pit" (aka McArthur Court) used to be one of the most feared places to play in the conference (or anywhere for that matter)...

Updated: Oregon State Preview

6:34 PM Wed, Jan 14, 2009 |

Last year, a game against Oregon State meant an automatic win. The Beavers finished the season 6-25 and they became the first team in Pac-10 history to ever go winless in conference play.

This year, it's a much different story. The Beavers have already matched last year's win total (they are 6-8) and they've even chalked up a conference win (they beat USC on January 4th).

A big reason for the turnaround is new head coach Craig ...

Gibson To Play In Senior Bowl

9:14 PM Tue, Jan 13, 2009 |

Washington State wide receiver Brandon Gibson was invited to play in the upcoming Senior Bowl.

Here is the release from Washington State University:

"PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State senior wide receiver Brandon Gibson has accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour Senior Bowl, bowl officials announced today.

An honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference selection following the 2008 season, Gibson completed h...

Cougars Sneak Past Stanford, 55-54

9:49 PM Sat, Jan 10, 2009 |

Wow!

That's about all I can say after the Washington State men slipped past Stanford on Saturday in Pullman.

The Cougs won it 55-54, but it's amazing they were even in the game after a miserable first half. Washington State shot just 20% (4-for-20) from the field before the break and went through two massive stretches without a field goal. The longest lasted 12 minutes and 53 seconds at the end of the opening stanza (Wazzu went...

Stanford Preview

10:17 AM Fri, Jan 09, 2009 |

The Washington State men's basketball team continued to struggle Wednesday night against California. The two teams traded buckets in the first half, but the Golden Bears opened the game up in the second half. That led to Wazzu's third straight loss, 57-50.

What's the problem?

It's simple...the Cougars can't score. They've averaged just 50 points per game (while allowing 63 ppg) during their three game skid. Having a solid defen...

California Preview

9:45 AM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |

The Washington State men's basketball team has seen better days. They've lost two in a row and four out of their last six. The most recent loss being the worst...a 68-48 drubbing against rival Washington.

But, you know what they say, you're always just one win away from getting back on track (I don't know if "they" really say that...I might have just made that up).

The Cougars Pac-10 slate continues this week with California (T...

Cougars Ink Tight End To NLI

8:30 PM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |

The Washington State football team announced that tight end Peter Tuitupou (pronounced too-ee-too-po) signed a National Letter of Intent today (much of this information is courtesy of WSU).

He will enroll for classes at Wazzu when the semester gets going on January 12th.

"Peter is a great addition to our program," said head coach Paul Wulff. "He is a big, physical player with good hands and is a very good blocker. He provides a...

Notes And Quotes From UW/WSU

8:43 AM Sun, Jan 04, 2009 |

Here's a quick follow up on yesterday's game between Washington and Washington State. The Dawgs snapped their seven games losing skid to the Cougars with a 68-48 victory.

The most glaring stat that I left out yesterday was WSU's assist-to-turnover ratio. The Cougs registered just four assists compared to 14 turnovers. Yikes!

Nobody explains what happened in a game better than the people who were involved in it, so here are some...

Cougars crushed by Huskies, 68-48

7:00 PM Sat, Jan 03, 2009 |

How disappointing was that?

Washington State (a two point favorite) did not show up Saturday against the rival Washington Huskies. The Cougs were within five points midway through the second half, but UW closed the game on a 22-7 run. That means the Dawgs snapped their seven game skid against WSU with a 68-48 win.

The Cougars need to fix their second half woes. In the last two games combined (LSU and UW), Wazzu has been outscor...

Thursday: Washington Preview

9:28 AM Thu, Jan 01, 2009 |

If you didn't get a chance to read yesterday's preview of the Washington/Washington State game click here.

I don't care what anyone else says, this is the biggest game on both team's schedule. It's even bigger these days because Wazzu wants to extend their winning streak against the Huskies (it's seven games right now)...and the Dawgs want their losing...
