December 2008 ArchivesIt's never too early to start previewing the rivalry of all rivalries. Washington State opens Pac-10 play Saturday against the dreaded Washington Huskies. It doesn't get much better than this! The Cougars are 8-4 on the season. The Huskies are 9-3. With that said, (I know this is a cliché) records don't matter in games like this. Washington wants revenge after losing seven straight the Cougars, while Wazzu wants to keep their w... To put it simply...Washington State gave it away. The Cougars were within one point (even though they led by seven at one point) with 3:17 left in the game, but they let Louisiana State finish on an 11-0 run (that capped a 25-4 run in the final nine minutes). The Tigers wound up winning, 64-52. It's the Cougars fourth loss of the season. The biggest turning point was Aron Baynes fumbling a rebound (his hands might be made of st... I don't usually do this during the week, but I'm hoping I can make it more of a trend (plus, it's really slow right now). Here are some excerpts from Tony Bennett's teleconference. He touched on Louisiana State, Caleb Forrest, the rotation, and so much more. On playing LSU on December 27th in Baton Rouge (where Tony's wife is from)... "We wanted to play a tough team before conference play started. The fact that we get ... It wasn't the prettiest basketball game, but Washington State got the job done Sunday night against Idaho. The Cougars finished on a 16-3 run to beat the Vandals, 55-41 (Idaho was within a point before that). Wazzu is now 8-3 with one nonconference game left on the schedule. The Vandals and Cougars have played in 104 straight seasons, making it the longest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi River. No one really seems to care th... Finals are over...that means Washington State is ready to play basketball again. The Cougars (7-3) hit the floor tomorrow against Idaho (5-5). It's Wazzu's first game in more than a week (they beat Montana State in the Cougar Hardwood Classic on Saturday). It's also WSU's first true road game of the season (so they'll be sporting the crimson jerseys for the first time). Washington State looked as good offensively as they have a... I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to update my blog much this week. As many of you saw, we covered weather and weather only for the last two days (I was even pulled off sports to help cover the snow storm). I figured I better get something on here ASAP. Washington State University just sent out this release about Taylor Rochestie: PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University men's basketball senior Taylor Rochestie is one of... Some of you looked at the headline and said, "Who is Ken Pomeroy?" In fact, most of you probably did. The best thing I can tell you is...the guy is a genius (I talked a little bit about him last season). He uses a formula (the pythagorean calculation for expected winning percentage) to create a ratings system "that is designed to be purely predictive." In his own words: "The purpose of this system is to show how strong ... If you can't win at Beasley (the Cougs have lost back-to-back nonconference games at home for the first time since 1985)...take your game to Seattle. That's the lesson the Washington State men's basketball team learned yesterday. The Cougars rolled in the fourth annual Cougar Hardwood Classic against Montana State. WSU started hot, allowed a small Bobcat run, and then cruised the rest of the way in front of 7,848 fans at KeyArena (not ... I feel like there are a lot of Cougar basketball fans out there losing hope. My advice is to not give up on this team or this season. I understand that Washington State has lost three of its last four, but every loss has come against a nationally ranked team (two teams in the Top 5). There is a long road ahead...and I see plenty of success. Wazzu will try to "right the ship" (in the words of Taylor Rochestie after the GU game) tomorrow... I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong. I didn't think there was any possibility for a blowout in tonight's game, but it got out of hand in the second half (the Zags led by as many as 33 points!). It was a tale of two halves... Washington State didn't play great in the first half, but they played well enough to be within three points at the break (32-29). Then it got UGLY in the second half (the Cougs looked as bad as I've... This is my third preview blog about the WSU/Gonzaga matchup. Be sure to read my others to optimize your regional rivalry experience. To read my Sunday preview click here. To read my Monday preview click here. Here's a quick story for you: I was at A... If you haven't checked out my Sunday preview yet click here. It's required reading if you want you want to maximize your Washington State/Gonzaga experience. Let's get right to it... I wanted to touch on this yesterday, but I ran out of time (I had the 10pm show on KSKN). I was able to discuss the importance of the Aron Baynes/Josh Heytvelt matchu... It's never too early to start previewing the biggest local matchup of the basketball season. Gonzaga (6-0) and Washington State (6-2) do battle on Wednesday night in Pullman. The Bulldogs could be ranked as high as No. 4 in the country come tomorrow. They're currently ranked 5th, but No. 4 Duke lost to Michigan last night. Washington State was "also receiving votes" since the start of the season...we'll see if anyone still has faith af... Washington State stuck with 24th ranked Baylor for most of 40 minutes on Saturday night, but couldn't hang in the end. The Cougars lost for only the second time this year, falling to the Bears 58-52 at Beasley Coliseum. Wazzu led as late as the 4:13 mark in the first half (it was 18-17 after a Nikola Koprivica free throw), but Baylor went on an 11-4 run to end the half up 29-22. The Cougs wouldn't regain advantage (at least they fought... I know I promised quotes last night, but instead of creating a new blog I wanted to leave the conversation open on my last one. South Korea Nate (a faithful blog reader) shared his opinions about Washington's hiring of Steve Sarkisian as head football coach. That led to more comments. If you want to get in the mix (which I encourage you to do) click her... I know I'm a little late (I have a good excuse...check out my last blog) on the end of the season football stuff (Paul Wulff held his final press conference on Monday), but I thought I'd pass along some links anyways (there are some decent articles). -- Here is an article from SportingNews.c... I'm really sorry I didn't have a game preview or wrap for the Idaho State game. I was out of town and had no access to my blog. I thought I had the link in my e-mail (so I could blog from Seattle), but I didn't (must have erased it when I was cleaning up my inbox). I was at least going to write a wrap today (even though it's a day late), but now I'm sick (some sort of flu bug I think) and I can't get myself to do it (a lame excuse, but... |
