Football Loses Finale To Hawaii

9:29 AM Sun, Nov 30, 2008 |

The Washington State football squad played hard on Saturday night in Hawaii, but two early touchdowns would be enough to ruin them in the end. The Cougars lost to the Warriors 24-10, leading WSU to their first eleven loss season in school history.

Hawaii darted out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Wazzu's defense settled in and held the Warriors to a field goal in the second quarter (:31 before the half). Nico Grasu drilled a f...

Pittsburgh Downs Wazzu, 57-43

2:41 AM Sun, Nov 30, 2008 |

Now Washington State knows what it feels like to get beat by solid defense. After holding their first five opponents to an average of 41 points per game, the Cougars were held to less than 50 points Saturday night. They lost in the championship of the Legends Classic to fourth ranked Pittsburgh, 57-43.

The Cougars led several times in the first half, but never by more than four points. WSU only trailed 26-23 at the break, but never sto...

Pittsburgh Preview

12:42 AM Sat, Nov 29, 2008 |

Washington State passed its first real test of the year yesterday with a 63-52 victory over Mississippi State. The win puts the Cougars (off to a 5-0 start for the third straight year) in the Legends Classic championship game against 4th ranked Pittsburgh on Saturday evening. The Panthers are 6-0 after an 80-67 win over Texas Tech in the semifinals.

Pittsburgh's top scorer is forward Sam Young. The senior averages 20.2 points per game ...

Cougs Pass Test Against Mississippi State

6:12 PM Fri, Nov 28, 2008 |

It wasn't pretty at times, but Washington State beat Mississippi State on Friday afternoon to advance to the Legends Classic championship tomorrow night. The Cougs led by as many as 17 points, the Bulldogs got within six late, but WSU held on for a 63-52 win.

"I thought we were solid in stretches, but I don't think we executed down the stretch," Tony Bennett said after the game, "There were some bonehead plays that might have cost us i...

Mississippi State Preview

9:29 AM Fri, Nov 28, 2008 |

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

It sounds like the team practiced yesterday (at a small college in New Jersey) in preparation for today's battle against Mississippi State (it's the semifinals of the Legends Classic). After practice, they hopped on a subway to New York City and toured around the World Trade Center site. Nikola Kopriciva described the experience on Jessica Schmick's (the basketball SID) blog on wsucougars.com:<...

Football Isn't Over Yet

3:35 PM Wed, Nov 26, 2008 |

The Washington State football season isn't over yet (even though I wish it was...I like ending with the Apple Cup). For only the fifth time in 50 years the Cougars will finish the regular season against someone besides Washington. Wazzu plays Hawaii on Saturday.

The Warriors are 6-5 this year (winners in five of their last seven) and they consider this a "must win" game (a victory makes them bowl eligible). They beat Idaho last week 49...

Cougars Beat Canisius, 67-41

11:08 PM Tue, Nov 25, 2008 |

The Washington State men's basketball team keeps winning, but that's probably because they haven't played anyone worthwhile yet (a win is a win, right?).

The Cougars are 4-0 after beating Canisius 67-41 (it was 39-15 at the half) on Tuesday night at Beasley Coliseum. Wazzu has won every game this season by 20 or more points...while allowing an average of 38.5 points (I've said it before and I'll say it again...that's an impressive stat...

Canisius Preview

10:40 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

There hasn't been much time for the Washington State men's basketball team to sit back and enjoy their undefeated start. The Cougars are 3-0...preparing for their fourth game in ten days. WSU already beat Mississippi Valley State, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Sacramento State...next up is Canisius College on Tuesday.

Canisius is a private college located in Buffalo, New York. The Golden Griffins (What is a Griffin? It looks like a half eag...

Cougars Win Apple Cup, 16-13

10:45 PM Sat, Nov 22, 2008 |

Warning: There is nothing unbiased about this Apple Cup blog...I LOVE THE COUGS!!!

The Cougars are Apple Cup champions for the fourth time in the last five years...and they did it in dramatic fashion. It doesn't take away all the pain of a terrible season, but it sure does help (at least I think so).

Honestly, the game was pretty boring until the last minute of regulation and into overtime. Trailing 10-7, the ...

Men's Basketball Beats Sac State

8:56 AM Sat, Nov 22, 2008 |

The Washington State men's basketball team remained undefeated (3-0) Friday night with a 76-55 win over Sacramento State. It was a much different ball game compared to what we've seen from WSU so far this season.

I know this sounds really picky (because Wazzu allowed only 55 points), but the Cougar defense struggled a little bit against a weak Hornets team. WSU had allowed only 58 points combined heading into last night's game. Sacrame...

Friday: Apple Cup Info & Links

9:00 AM Fri, Nov 21, 2008 |

The Apple Cup is almost here! Kickoff is set for 12pm TOMORROW!

I guess it's about time to share my favorite Apple Cup moment (and I encourage you to do the same...just leave a comment below). It will probably help explain why I love the rivalry game so much and why I can't wait for game day (even though the teams are terrible).

Here's my story:

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (lived there for five years), moved to M...

Sacramento State Preview

12:34 PM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |

To say that Washington State's defense has stood out so far this season is an understatement. They've excelled, dominated, pick whatever positive word you want. The Cougars have allowed just 58 points in their first two games combined (25 to Mississippi Valley State; 33 to Fairleigh Dickinson), an average of 29 points per game (that's unheard of...I don't care who the opponents were).

With that said...I expect more of the same Friday a...

Thursday: Apple Cup Info & Links

10:32 AM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |

The odds keep turning in Washington State's favor. The line for the Apple Cup opened at eight and a half on Sunday...it's now down to seven (in one case I saw six and a half).

The Cougs also had quarterback Kevin Lopina back at practice yesterday. It was the first time he saw the field since getting a concussion against Arizona State. Paul Wulff told Howie Stalwick of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that he expects Lopina to st...

Wednesday: Apple Cup Info & Links

10:20 AM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |

I'll start with the good news...we're just four days away from the Apple Cup.

Here is the bad news...I was given today off (I had to fill-in for Tom Hudson last night (my normal day off) because he calls the Gonzaga games), so I won't be at practice.

That doesn't mean I won't be paying attention to what's going on in Pullman.

We actually sent a photographer to practice yesterday (there is limited media availability this...

Cougs Slug Past Fairleigh Dickinson

11:47 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

It wasn't a pretty basketball game, but the Cougars got the job done Tuesday night against Fairleigh Dickinson. Washington State beat the Knights, 55-33.

That's right...Wazzu has allowed only 58 points in their first two games combined. That's unbelievable!

The Cougs led the game 26-15 at the half (WSU has allowed only 26 points in the first half so far). It's the 11th time Washington State has held an opponent to less than 20 ...

Tuesday: Apple Cup Info & Links

10:08 AM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

We are one day closer to the Apple Cup!

It looks like more people (gamblers...always a good judge of who will win a football game [insert laugh track here]) are starting to back the Cougars. The line was at eight and a half on Sunday and in most cases has dropped to seven and a half (as of this morning).

There are some cool events surrounding Saturday's contest. This one in particular really has me excited. Washington State is ...

Fairleigh Dickinson Preview

2:19 PM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |

It didn't take long for the Washington State men's basketball team to make a statement. They pounded Mississippi Valley State 76-25 (the fewest points allowed by WSU since 1948) in the season opener on Saturday. They don't get much time to celebrate though with Fairleigh Dickinson in town tomorrow.

It's the opening round of the 2008 Legends Classic. WSU, Pittsburgh, Texas Tech, and Mississippi State are all hosting regionals. The tour...

Monday: Apple Cup Info & Links

11:10 AM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |

It's probably the worst matchup in college football this weekend (or the entire season), but I can't tell you how excited I am for the Apple Cup. As Washington defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim told The Seattle Times:

"You do not have to do much to get hyped for the Apple Cup. I have been waiting for this game for the entire year. I think I could wake up any day of the year and play Washington State. That is how excited I am f...

Cougars Blanked By ASU, 31-0

10:26 AM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

I never thought I would say this...I miss Alex Brink. Heck, I miss Steve Birnbaum at this point.

Washington State's offense could do absolutely nothing yesterday against Arizona State. They were shutout for the third time in the last four games, 31-0. On a positive note...it was only 10-0 at the half (sadly, I never felt like Wazzu was in it).

The Cougars could muster only 130 yards of total offense (123 through the air and ju...

Basketball Cruises In Opener

9:32 AM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

I guess you can say this year's Cougars are a step ahead of where they were last year (I know I am stretching a bit). Washington State pounded Mississippi Valley State in last night's season opener, 76-25. That's five more points scored and one less point allowed compared to last year's game against the Delta Devils (71-26 on November 24th).

The key stat here is the 25 points allowed. That's the fewest points the Cougars have allowed ...

Mississippi Valley St. Preview & More

8:25 AM Fri, Nov 14, 2008 |

You probably already know this...the Washington State men's basketball season gets started Saturday night in Beasley Coliseum. What you might not know is...anything about their opponent Mississippi Valley State. That's why I am here.

Before I get too far into this (and probably overhype the Delta Devils) I want to remind everyone what happened last year when these two teams hooked up (November 24th at the Spokane Arena). Washington Sta...

Football Practice & Basketball Recruits

10:19 PM Wed, Nov 12, 2008 |

I'm going to kill two birds with one stone here. I'll start with my report from football practice, but I'm also going to talk about the 2009-2010 basketball recruiting class (I talked to Tony Bennett about the future Cougs today).

The football squad went under cover today (the rain was falling sideways in Pullman). There was some energy that I haven't seen in a while. Everyone was screaming and yelling getting pumped up (it was louder ...

Basketball Rolls In Exhibition Game

10:46 PM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |

I hardly know the "new" Washington State men's basketball team, but I already love them. I had only seen them in practice once and had read plenty of articles on the freshmen, but to see them play someone else was awesome.

The Cougars made quick work of Lewis-Clark State tonight in their lone exhibition game of the season. Wazzu easily won, 76-31.

The first thing you'll notice from the score is the 31 points allowed. Here we g...

WSU dropped by Arizona, 59-28

11:47 AM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

I'm sorry I'm late on this, but better late than never. I'm also questioning how much you want to read about another WSU downfall (that's why I love passionate Cougar fans...they still want to talk about their team even though they are having a down year).

Washington State lost to Arizona on Dad's Weekend, 59-28. Obviously, the offense showed up, but the defense did not.

The Cougars were actually in the game early in the second...

Men's Basketball Scrimmage

12:46 PM Sat, Nov 08, 2008 |

The Washington State men's basketball team held an intrasquad scrimmage today before the football game. I wasn't there, but I know several faithful Cougar fans who were (they were my eyes and ears for this blog). I also got some information from Jessica Schmick in the Sports Information Department.

The scrimmage was split up into three different games. Here is the information from Jessica Schmick's blog:

"The first game pit...

Updated: Wednesday Practice Report

10:23 PM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |

I was expecting it to be a nice day in Pullman and it was. The sun was shining, but on the field at Martin Stadium (that's where the team practiced today) it was FREEZING! My fingers were so cold I could hardly hold onto my pen when I was writing notes. In other words, if it was any colder there wouldn't be a blog today (no notes = no blog).

Maybe the cold temperatures will affect Arizona on Saturday. The high in Tucson is expected to ...

Some Cool (And Not So Cool) Facts

1:10 PM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |

After further review...not everything was bad for Washington State on Saturday in Palo Alto. I've read plenty of articles and finally scanned over the postgame notes and found some cool stuff.

The first is a fun fact...

Freshman quarterback J.T. Levenseller completed the first pass of his career to tight end Tony Thompson. J.T. is the son of former Cougar wide receiver (now wide receivers coach) Mike Levenseller and Tony is the...

Updated: Cougars Pounded By Stanford, 58-0

12:05 AM Sun, Nov 02, 2008 |

I'm not really sure what to say anymore.

Washington State never stood a chance Saturday against Stanford. The Cardinal pounded the Cougars 58-0. It's the first time since 1969 (according to my research) that Wazzu has been shutout in back-to-back games.

The Cougars made it inside the Cardinal 20 yard line twice, but were unable to capitalize. The first effort was shutdown when Stanford blocked a Nico Grasu 28-yard field goal at...
