Updated: Wednesday Practice Report

11:43 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

(I've added information about the men's basketball preseason coaches' poll)

It was great to be back in Pullman (the Cougars closed practice last week). The weather was great and the football team is getting ready for Stanford after a bye week.

It sounds like they were working especially hard last week. All of the players I talked to said that the practices were really intense...like something you'd see during camp (it ...

Coming Up: Stanford

4:48 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

It was a boring bye week without Cougar football (not much to write about), but now I'm back to the blog.

Washington State returns to action on Saturday against Stanford. Unfortunately, the Cardinal aren't the same Cardinal team they used to be (they used to be the closest thing to a guaranteed win in the Pac-10). Stanford is 4-4 overall, 3-2 in the conference (wins over Arizona, Oregon State, and Washington).

Cardinal quarterb...

J.T. Likely To Play

9:02 AM Fri, Oct 24, 2008 |

It sounds like the Cougars are getting J.T. Levenseller ready to play against Stanford. That goes against everything they've wanted to do all season, because they were hoping to save the Pullman High graduate's redshirt.

I have to give credit where credit is due. Vince Grippi of The Spokesman-Review was the first to report on this. But, just so you know, I didn't read his article (just saw the headline online). I wanted to fin...

Men's Basketball Practice

1:05 PM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |

I apologize for not getting to this on Monday like I said I would. I was a little under the weather, but I'm feeling better now.

I went to men's basketball practice before the USC game on Saturday (they opened practice on Friday). It was weird walking in and not seeing Kyle Weaver and Derrick Low (I would say Robbie Cowgill too, but he was actually there). It's a whole different team, but I like what I saw.

The Cougars have sev...

Wazzu Smashed By USC, 69-0

7:58 AM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

I'm not really sure what to say after a drubbing like this...

I made it to my first game of the season and it wasn't much of a game at all. Washington State never stood a chance Saturday against 6th ranked USC falling 69-0 in the end. It's the second time this year the Cougars have set the "worst loss in team history" mark (the first was the 66-3 pounding against California). It's also the first time since 1984 (280 straight games) tha...

Wednesday Practice Report

11:07 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

It looks and sounds like Kevin Lopina is going to start at quarterback for Washington State on Saturday (as long as there aren't any setbacks).

I talked to Lopina today and he said his back feels "really good." He didn't have any problems practicing yesterday and he didn't look limited at all today (he was going through all the drills). He said it's nice to be back on the field and he told me "it's like riding a bike"...things are easi...

Quarterback Update And More

5:31 PM Tue, Oct 14, 2008 |

There's good news to report...

Kevin Lopina practiced today. I texted Joe Nickle of the WSU Sports Information Department and asked if Lopina was limited at all. He responded back, "No contact and they're not in full pads, but he's doing all the drills."

There are a couple more injury notes...

The Seattle Times reported that running back Christopher Ivory (hamstring) and tight end Devin Frischknecht (high ankle...

Lobbestael Out For Season

2:19 PM Mon, Oct 13, 2008 |

Marshall Lobbestael's injury is much worse than originally thought.

The early diagnosis was a sprained knee (and that he would miss two-to-four weeks), but further tests revealed much worse. Lobbestael actually tore his ACL and MCL on Saturday against Oregon State. He is done for the season. His recovery is expected to take about nine months, according to Washington State University.

Needless to say, that's terrible news for a ...

Marshall Lobbestael Update

8:59 PM Sat, Oct 11, 2008 |

I have to make this quick...

This is the early word on quarterback Marshall Lobbestael:

He has a sprained knee...it sounds like he's expected to miss two-to-four weeks.

That means Washington State will probably have some decisions to make when it comes to the quarterback position.

Dan Wagner played in place of Lobbestael tonight because Wazzu didn't want to burn J.T. Levenseller's redshirt.

Keep in mind,...

Oregon State Pounds Cougs, 66-13

5:44 PM Sat, Oct 11, 2008 |

Washington State couldn't hang with Oregon State in the end, but for the first time since the season opener I was truly excited about Cougar football.

The Florida/LSU game wiped out our early shows, so I could actually watch a lot of the game. I saw the Cougars score to make it 21-7, but then had to hop in the shower (a horrifying thought I'm sure). When I got out, I saw the replay of Louis Bland taking an interception in for a touchdo...

Wednesday Practice Report

10:23 PM Wed, Oct 08, 2008 |

I might get a little longwinded here, but hopefully it's not too bad. It was a busy day in Pullman.

Washington State University is still buzzing about the new scout team quarterback Peter Roberts (check out my previous blog The Winner Is...Peter Roberts if you don't know who he is). It's not just the school that's talking about him. I saw a piece yesterday on ESPN's Outside the Lines and I guess Jim Rome talked about ...

The Winner Is...Peter Roberts

12:58 PM Tue, Oct 07, 2008 |

After Gary Rogers was lost for the season (cervical spine fracture) and with Kevin Lopina out for a while (a broken vertebra in his neck...still not sure when he is going to return) the Cougars were left with a lack of quarterbacks.

Marshall Lobbestael, J.T. Levenseller, and Dan Wagner were the only healthy bodies left (Wagner is also used as a punter...he started the season opener). That left no one to run the scout team.

So, ...

Cougars Lose To UCLA, 28-3

11:07 PM Sat, Oct 04, 2008 |

I'll start with the positive...Washington State was not shutout. Nico Grasu drilled a 47-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the university's scoring streak to 279 straight games. That's the second longest streak in the country (behind Michigan's 303). The Cougs haven't been shutout since 1984 (a 44-0 loss to Ohio State).

Other than that there wasn't much to cheer about in Saturday's 28-3 loss to UCLA.

The Cougars ru...

Palouse Ridge Experience

9:05 AM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |

I'll start this out with a statement: If you are a golfer, you have to check out Palouse Ridge Golf Club at Washington State University.

I was lucky enough to play there on Tuesday with some friends. We couldn't have asked for a better day...the weather was perfect.

We started by eating lunch at Branyan's (the restaurant inside the clubhouse). The service was very slow, but the food was good. We ate out on the back deck (which ...

Wednesday Practice Report

11:19 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

Sorry I haven't blogged since Saturday, but I've been busy. I actually spent the day in Pullman yesterday playing the Palouse Ridge Golf Club (it was awesome...check back here tomorrow for all the info plus pictures of the course) and having a couple of cold ones at The Coug.

Of course, I was back in Pullman today for practice. It was one of the hottest practices I've been to this year and it's October 1st. I wish it was like this ever...
