There's more bad news for Washington State quarterbacks. We've been reporting that Kevin Lopina had a bruised shoulder (and that's all everyone really thought it was), but it turns out he broke his back. Here is the release from Wazzu (there is also an injury note about Jason Stripling): PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University junior quarterback Kevin Lopina suffered a fracture of the L-4 transverse process of his vertebrae, according to WSU Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training Bill Drake. Lopina was injured during the second quarter of Saturday's 48-9 victory over Portland State at Martin Stadium and left the contest with a deep bruise in his throwing shoulder. Following a series of tests and re-evaluations Sunday, Monday and today, the back injury was discovered. Lopina is out indefinitely and will be reevaluated on a weekly basis. In unrelated injury news, it was determined Tuesday morning that junior linebacker Jason Stripling will need surgery on his left shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season. Obviously, Lopina did not practice today and won't play this weekend. That means Marshall Lobbestael (the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week) will be the starter against Oregon. I'll be at practice tomorrow and will learn more about the quarterback situation and so much more. I'll have my weekly practice report right here...so be sure to check back. P.S. The university also sent out a release about changes to the men's basketball schedule (it's pretty boring, but thought I'd give you the heads up): PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University men's basketball's final two opponents have been announced, as have date changes and the preliminary television schedule, WSU athletics department announced Tuesday. The Cougars have flip-flopped several dates in the month of November as they open up the season Saturday, Nov. 15 hosting Mississippi Valley State, a game originally scheduled for Nov. 23. The Cougars will then take on Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the first round of the Legends Classic held in Pullman. WSU's matchup with Sacramento State remains Friday, Nov. 21 before the Cougars take on their newly appointed opponent, Canisius, Tuesday, Nov. 25. WSU closes the month of November in Newark, N.J., at the Legends Classic where it takes on Mississippi State in the semifinals (Nov. 28). It will then take on either Pittsburgh or Texas Tech (Nov. 29). In the preliminary television schedule announced by the Pacific-10 Conference, the Cougars will appear on TV at least eight times on FSN, CBS and possibly ABC. Regional television, including FSN Northwest, is still a possibility for the remaining games. The Cougars will make their 2008-09 national television debut Dec. 6 when they host Baylor at Friel Court at 8:30 p.m. PST. At least five of WSU's Pac-10 games will appear on FSN, including three-straight games at Oregon State (Jan. 15) and Oregon (Jan. 17) and home against UCLA (Jan. 22). The Cougars' games at California (Feb. 7) and at UCLA (Feb. 21) have also been picked up by the network. Washington State's game at Arizona (Jan. 31) will be an early start with a 10 a.m. PST (11 a.m. local time) tipoff. The game will be televised live on CBS. The Cougars' final two games of the season (vs. Arizona State, Feb. 28; at Washington, March 7) are listed as wildcard games and have the possibility to be picked up by TV. The first eight games of the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament will be shown on FSN, while the championship game will air on CBS. |
