September 2008 ArchivesWhat the heck happened to Washington State? Was it Bill Doba? Is it the current coaches? The players? There are questions that need to be answered (maybe I'm just a bitter Cougar fan that has watched his team fall as deep as he's ever seen). The Cougars never stood a chance against Oregon Saturday at Martin Stadium. They lost to the Ducks, 63-14. WSU trailed 14-0 three minutes into the game and never made a game of it (the clo... Kevin Lopina, who is out with a broken vertebra, should be healthy enough to return in a few weeks (I'm told). Until then, it's safe to say, Marshall Lobbestael will take every snap at quarterback for Washington State (good, bad, or indifferent...and if he stays healthy). That's because the Cougs will do whatever they can to keep (new backup QB) J.T. Levenseller's redshirt intact. So, I'm here to tell you a little bit about the guy eve... Every time I'm in Pullman for Cougar practice I hear a new phrase. This week it was, "It's big play Wednesday." Dwight Tardy said it over and over again during warm-ups. It still sounds like the coaches still don't like some of the players' work ethic. During special teams I heard co-defensive coordinator Jody Sears yell at several guys for walking around. Chris Ball (the other defensive coordinator) also made the defensive backs start... There's more bad news for Washington State quarterbacks. We've been reporting that Kevin Lopina had a bruised shoulder (and that's all everyone really thought it was), but it turns out he broke his back. Here is the release from Wazzu (there is also an injury note about Jason Stripling): PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University junior quarterback Kevin Lopina suffered a fracture of the L-4 transverse process of his vert... The Cougars have a big decision to make at the quarterback position come Saturday...if injuries don't make the decision for them. Gary Rogers is out for the season after he suffered a cervical spine fracture against Portland State. Kevin Lopina also left the game against the Vikings...he has a deep shoulder bruise (Wulff says they are taking a "wait and see" approch with his progress this week). And, Marshall... There was plenty of reason to celebrate in Pullman on Saturday night...there was also plenty of reason not to. I guess it's a case of good news, bad news. Usually I'd ask which one you want first, but in this situation you don't get a choice. THE COUGS WIN! From the very first play of the game (a Hallston Higgins interception that set up a touchdown), Washington State dominated Portland State. The end result: a 48-9 victory (th... I have to make this quick because it's a busy Saturday night... Here is the update on Gary Rogers from Washington State University: PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior quarterback Gary Rogers suffered a "stable cervical spine fracture that is non surgical," according to WSU Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training Bill Drake. Rogers has been admitted to Pullman Memorial Hospital overnight for obser... Washington State is just one day away from what should be their first win of the season (it's sad that I have to say "what should be"). They take on Portland State (a Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA) team out of the Big Sky Conference) tomorrow at Martin Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4pm. We know what the Cougars bring to the table, but what about the Vikings? That's what I'm here for... Portland State is 1-1 this year. T... I'm sorry I haven't updated the blog in a few days. I was out of town and didn't have internet access (I swear my mom still lives in the Dark Ages). I'm back know...and as always I have my weekly report from Pullman. I don't know if it was the heat, but the energy level at practice today didn't seem very high. At one point, the first team defense ran onto the field for a drill and Chris Ball sent them back to the sideline (he was mad..... I'm not even sure what to say... I watched and listened to as much of the game as I could (it's a high school Friday night). When given the chance (after work) to watch the tape delay on FSN Northwest, I only made it through 15 minutes before getting angry and turning it off. Washington State looked terrible again in a 45-17 loss to the Bears. The Cougars are now 0-3 for the first time since 1999. Kevin Lopina made the ... I'm still trying to figure it out. Most of my sources are still telling me "it's a game time decision" (and I actually believe them). One of the people I talked to recently spoke with Kevin Lopina. When asked if he was starting, Lopina said, "I think so, but I don't really know." Lopina took the majority of snaps with the first team this week at practice. Like I mentioned before, that makes sense because the coaches wanted to g... Washington State's football game against Baylor is rescheduled for Friday night at 5:30 Pacific Time. Here is the release from the university: PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University has moved its football game against Baylor up to Friday, Sept. 12, and will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. CDT in order to avoid complications caused by the approach of Hurricane Ike to the Texas coast this weekend. The game, origin... "Who's going to empty the tank today?" I think that's the new motto at Cougar football practice (I heard it over and over again). It sounds like the coaching staff is trying to find out who wants to compete and who doesn't. When I asked Paul Wulff about how bad the team wants to win, he told me that "wanting to win and taking the right steps to win" are totally different. It still sounds like he doesn't like the way the team practices.... Will it be Gary Rogers? Will it be Kevin Lopina? Do you care? It sounds like there is a quarterback controversy on the Palouse (why wouldn't there be?). Rogers has been less than impressive in his first two starts, completing 22 of 45 passes for 160 yards. He's also thrown three interceptions and just one touchdown. Lopina saw the first action of his college career (even though he's a junior) on Saturday. He connected on three... I'm not really sure what to say... This is the worst I've seen Washington State look in years. I've been told (I'm still trying to find out if it's the truth) that Saturday's 66-3 route by California is the worst loss in Cougar history. Nothing looked good. California scored on the first play of the game (an 80 yard touchdown run by Jahvid Best) and they never looked back. In fact, they scored a second touchdown on only their t... I woke up this morning excited for another Cougar football Saturday. What's the best way to share your excitement? Blog (at least that's what I'm told). This is going to be quick, so try to keep up! An injury update: As I reported earlier this week (it still stands true today), the Cougs will have offensive tackle Vaughn Lesuma and punter Reid Forrest back from injury. There was some thought Daniel Blackledge would be healthy e... Unfortunately, because of my work schedule this week, I will not be in Pullman tomorrow for practice. That doesn't mean I won't be keeping a close eye on the Cougs. As for today, we're focusing on California. The Cougars and Golden Bears kickoff conference play on Saturday (3:30pm start time at a revamped Martin Stadium). The Bears (predicted to finish fourth in the Pac-10 at the start of the season) are coming off a 38... |
