A Little Something About Everything

10:52 AM Thu, May 08, 2008 |

There is no real standout story going on right now with Cougar athletics, but there are a few things to talk about.

The first thing to mention (a downer) is that academic issues are finally catching up with the football team. I'm sure you've heard by now that WSU lost eight scholarships because of their poor academic standing (graduation rates, etc.). I started to notice a serious problem last year when it seemed like 20 (not sure the actual number) guys were ruled academically ineligible (DeMaundray Woolridge, Darrell Hutsona, Arkelon Hall, Jason Stripling, etc.). Now, Washington State will have to suffer the consequences. This might upset some people, but I think the sanctions are justified. School comes first...then sports.

That brings me to an update on Andy Roof. The latest reports are that he will be charged with a felony (for breaking a guy's cheekbone) and a handful of misdemeanors. Official charges are expected to be filed within the next two weeks. Paul Wulff isn't expected to make any decisions on Roof until the legal process plays out.

There is some good news for the Cougar football team. Redshirt junior Kenny Alfred was one of 42 players named to the Rimington Award Watch List. The Rimington Award is annually handed to the nation's best center.

The Cougar baseball team might be back! They've won seven of their last nine (including a series win over Oregon State and a two game sweep over BYU). Wazzu plays Washington in a three game set starting on Friday night in Seattle. There is still some talk that Washington State (26-20 overall, 5-10 (last place) in the conference) could make the post season. That's because they rank 26th in college baseball's RPI ratings (.586) and play in the toughest conference in the nation.

That's all I have for now...

Is there anything you want to talk about? I'm open to anything...just drop me a comment below.
