Bennett In Talks With WSU

10:33 PM Thu, Apr 03, 2008 |

Washington State University and Tony Bennett are in contract talks that would likely keep the men's basketball coach in Pullman. The school says negotiations like this are typical for every coach after any sports season (I'm sure these are a little more serious, because Bennett is being mentioned for several other jobs).

WSU athletic director Jim Sterk told members of the sports information department that the discussions surround salaries for Bennett and his assistants, facilities, and travel accommodations (they didn't mention charter flights specifically, but that's probably what they mean by "travel").

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Bennett already agreed to a new contract (citing President Elson Floyd). My sources, as of Thursday night, said that no agreement has been reached.

Bennett turned down Indiana earlier this week, but his name is still being floated for other high profile positions (LSU and Marquette). That's all speculation at this point (Bennett is in San Antonio for the Final Four...if he is going to talk to other schools he'd likely do it this week). Sterk still says no one (aside from Indiana) has asked for his permission to talk to Bennett.

Keep checking back here for updates...

Here's the latest on the Cal job:

ESPN's Andy Katz is reporting that former Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery has agreed in principal to take the Golden Bears gig.

Montgomery, who still has strong ties to the Cardinal, led Stanford to the Final Four in 1998. In 2004, he became head coach of the Golden State Warriors (that only lasted two seasons...he's been a broadcaster since).

Even though Tony Bennett insisted he wouldn't take a different job within the conference, several media outlets continued to report that he was a candidate (it makes me wonder where some of these guys get their information).

Ryan Anderson, Cal's star forward, just declared for the NBA (adding to what will probably be an increasing list of Pac-10 underclassmen going pro). He will not immediately sign an agent, so he can come back next year if he wants (please go!).

Lets get this fundraising drive in full swing for both programs and prove to Bennett that we believe in our program and the direction he has it headed. Upgrading our facilities must happen and paying his assitants more would go a long way in proving that WSU is serious about building this program. I wish Mr. Sterk the best of luck on this endeavor and just hope the alumni start opening their wallets and contribute in any manner they may.
