April 2008 ArchivesWashington State's Alex Brink was picked by the Houston Texans in the 7th Round of today's NFL Draft (the 223rd overall selection). There are currently five quarterbacks on the Texans roster. Matt Schaub (last year's starter), Sage Rosenfels (started a few games when Schaub got hurt), Shane Boyd (spent most of the season on practice squad, but backed up Rosenfels when Schaub went down), Quinn Gray (started two games for Jacksonville la... All the anticipation is almost over...the NFL Draft starts tomorrow! There is a lack of local talent expected to be picked, but there are some Cougs who could go. The following is a glimpse into the profiles of three Cougar players on NFL.com (the only guys listed on the websites Draft Tracker) with some of my own analysis (or opinions): Courtesy: NFLDraftScout.com Alex Brink I'd heard plenty of rumor that Ferris' DeAngelo Casto was planning on heading to Wazzu...now it's official. Here's the release Washington State sent out earlier today: PULLMAN, Wash. - Ferris High School senior and the state's reigning player of the year, DeAngelo Casto, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Washington State University men's basketball team next season. "We are excited to have DeAngelo sign... I'm back from Las Vegas and ready to focus on Cougar football. Spring practice is over and the opener (against Oklahoma State in Seattle) is a little more than four months away. According to the players and coaches I've talked to, there is still a lot to learn before then. I talked about the no-huddle offense briefly before I left for my trip (my previous blog Spring Football (To Be Continued)). I can't tell you how excited I ... I know that I promised a report from spring practice...unfortunately, it has to be an abbreviated version (I'm getting ready to leave on weekend trip), but I promise to talk Cougar football when I get back. The first thing I noticed at Cougar practice was the energy level (I was literally pumped up myself just being there). Andy Mattingly told me it's a completely different atmosphere: "The coaches are younger and they're flying around... I've said it all along and now it's official...Tony Bennett is not leaving Washington State. Here's the release Wazzu sent out yesterday: "Tony Bennett announced Tuesday that he will remain the head men's basketball coach at Washington State University. "I will remain as the head coach at Washington State and I look forward to building for the future," Bennett said. "I am thankful for the opportunity this University gave me... There's no official word, but it sounds like Tony Bennett is not going for the Marquette job. Several media outlets reported that the Golden Eagles were interested, but Tony was not (instead it looks like Marquette is likely going with MU assistant Buzz Williams). Here is a sample of some of the reports: "Williams has spoken to Marquette officials about the job and may be emerging as the leading candidate now that Washington State's To... I'm sorry I am a day late on this, but this is the first time I had a chance to sit down at my computer. Here is the WSU press release about the Cougars spring practice on Friday: PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State quarterbacks combined to complete 20-of-31 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns Friday, in the Cougars' second spring scrimmage at Martin Stadium. Washington State University and Tony Bennett are in contract talks that would likely keep the men's basketball coach in Pullman. The school says negotiations like this are typical for every coach after any sports season (I'm sure these are a little more serious, because Bennett is being mentioned for several other jobs). WSU athletic director Jim Sterk told members of the sports information department that the discussions surround sala... I've said it before and I'll say it again: Tony Bennett isn't going anywhere (now we have his words to pretty much back that up). He's not pursuing Indiana...even after "exploratory conversations" (he did say he thought about going for the gig though). And, as expected (read my last blog: True or False? Tony Bennett Rumors), Bennett will not go for a different job within the Pac-10, including the California post. NOTE: >> Continue reading: Thoughts On Tony, Etc. |
