Defense can only take you so far...especially when you're not making your shots (I thought "troubleshooting" was clever). Saturday night's game against Arizona is a prime example. The Cougars shot a miserable 34% from the floor, 28% in the first half alone (the 22 points were the fewest in the opening stanza by WSU at home this year). The scary thing is...despite the poor shooting performance, the Cougars were still in the game with about two minutes to play. That shows that defense can still take you far (I don't think anyone is debating that). The Cougars have only lost by double-digits twice this year, both times to Arizona (76-64 in game one; 65-55 in game two). Even when the Cougs went on their three game skid (shooting 45% against California, 34% against Stanford, and 52% versus UCLA) they only lost by an average of five points. Pretty impressive I thought...(look at me being an optimist). Going back to Arizona...the Cougs don't match up well against them. A reader (Rob Dyrdek) made a great point in an earlier blog: The problem is that Arizona boasts a taller backcourt than ours with Bayless at 6'3", McClellan at 6'4", and Budinger at 6'7". No matter what, Low and Rochestie will be shorter than who they are guarding. That proved to be a huge problem. Wazzu was able to hold Jerryd Bayless scoreless in the first half, but crumbled after the break (he finished with 20). Plus, there's no reason Chase Budinger should be getting open looks so late in the game (Weaver was two steps behind him when he knocked down the three to make it 58-51 with two minutes to play -- the dagger). Another reader (Ryan Camp) put it well: Our beloved team is simply the victim of a bad matchup. For whatever reason the cougs cannot stop the duo of Bayless and Budinger. The matchup mystery is the same reason USC cannot avoid getting stomped by the cougs. Good crowd Saturday night! Just a bad matchup. Let's just hope we don't get that "bad matchup" again (Pac-10 Tournament)...I don't see the Cougs solving the mystery (back to being a pessimist). UCLA and Arizona seem to be the only teams that slow down the Bennett Train (more teams could be added to that list depending on how things play out against Cal and Stanford this week). Here's another question for you...what happened to Aron Baynes??? Yikes! Again, props to the crowd for showing up against Arizona (10,288 announced attendance). My brother (who didn't like the "laziest guy I know" comment in my previous blog) said the place was as loud as he'd ever heard it (he hasn't been to a game in Beasley since the Paul Graham Era, so I'm not sure if that's saying much). There's only one home game left, but I don't think you need my urging to get there...the game speaks for itself (Senior Night against the Huskies). P.S. If you didn't catch the Cougar baseball team this weekend, they took two out of three against Creighton to get the year started. They're out of town early this week, but return home to play Wright State on Friday-Sunday. P.S.S. In Ken Pom I Trust...we'll get 'em next time. 4 CommentsLeave a comment |

Mr. Camp is very accurate with his assessment of the killer B's. Let's just hope and cross our fingers we dont match up with them in the Pac-10 tourney. As shallow as the Wildcats are... they bring a matchup that just spells trouble for us. We are gonna need "Donk" to do more than what he did against Hill.
Only a few games left so buckle up kids and lets watch these COUGS do work!
In the first half we missed a bunch of easy hoops...basically lay-ups, and there were 2 in the second half I can remember. It's amazing how those come back to bite you (much like missing an extra point in the 1st quarter of a football game). Bayless and Budinger were sensational...both top 10 national recruits out of high school, and they are living up to it. As we all know, when we have guys disappear in games, we just do not have the talent to win, whereas Arizona does. Everyone has to bring their best every night for us to compete in the Pac-10.
On the baseball note, I have a question Tim. Is Creighton a pretty tough squad? And also, I have a feeling they do not, but being from Omaha, do they play in Rosenblatt stadium?
Champ Kind...whammy (I love it),
I also meant to mention the fact that the Cougars need to be clicking on all cylinders to win. If the defense is strong and the shooting is weak...we lose. If the offense is strong and the defense is weak...that'll never happen, so who knows. Thanks for bringing up that point.
As for Creighton, they are picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference (according to Baseball America). It's not a power conference, but there are some good teams, like Wichita State and Southern Illinois (both are projected NCAA teams). As for their home stadium...they play most of their games at the CU Sports Complex, but do play nine games at Rosenblatt this year.
Wright State, who rolls into town this weekend, is also a projected NCAA team. They're picked to finish on top of the Horizon League (can't say there are any other good teams).
Here's what BaseballAmerica.com had to say about the Raiders lineup: Wright State's dangerous lineup is anchored by junior first baseman Jeremy Hamilton, who hit .374 with nine homers and 22 doubles a year ago before earning a spot on Team USA in the summer. Junior shortstop Justin Parker (.379 with a school-record 26 doubles in 2007) and junior third baseman Jeff Mercer (who hit nine homers last year at Dayton before transferring to Wright State) add other power threats.
I like that people are expressing interest in the baseball squad.
P.S. To my man Joe Kane..."Donk" (Aron Baynes) needs to come back to life. He's averaged eight points and five rebounds over the last five games (which included a blowout victory against USC and an easy win over Oregon State). He should be doing much more damage than that. "Donk" is obviously an emotional guy, but sometimes I think his emotions get the best of him.
There was a lot of blame to go around on Sat. Everyone always seems to go after Baynes in our losses. Kind of like the Brink thing to me.
Weaver missed two bunnies in the first half, Cowgill missed a layin, we missed 4 in the first half. Turn that 22 firt half points into 30, things change.
Everyone loved Baynes on Thursday.
Harmeling struggled, we needed his threes, and a couple more from Low.
Weaver struggled some on D.
And yes, Baynes had his troubles. But not defensively. I find it intereting that Bennett gives Cowgill, and sometimes Harmeling a pass, and often talks well about their D, specifically after lesser offensive performances. The reason is that Bennett knows that this team can't win without playing well defensively, but the opposite is not the case.
PS. Like the blog, my first time here.
