No offense to Oregon State fans, but there's not much to say about Thursday's game against the Beavers. OSU has the chance to become the first Pac-10 team to go winless in conference play (they're currently 0-11). The Cougars should have no problem with the Beavers, especially if Kyle Weaver stays hot. Over the last four games, when the Cougars were anything but consistent, Weaver was rock solid. During that span, the senior guard averaged 17 points, nearly seven rebounds, four assists, a block, and almost three steals a game. He's also given us some great highlight reel material (like that reverse lay in around UCLA's Kevin Love...you know which one I'm talking about). On Saturday, Weaver also became the 29th player in Wazzu history to score 1,000 points in his career. Derrick Low achieved the same feat earlier in the year against Oregon State. That makes the two the first pair of Cougars to reach the milestone in the same season in 28 years (Don Collins and Terry Kelly did it in 1980). Adding to that, Weaver also recorded his 500th career assist against USC. According to the Pac-10, it's believed that he's the only player in conference history to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 150 steals, and 75 blocks in his career. Some of the best players in college basketball history have played in the Pac-10, so that's pretty impressive. Weaver (from my home state of Wisconsin) was picked for the Pan-American games this past off-season for a reason, he was put on the Wooden Award Watch List for a reason, and he'll probably play in the NBA for a reason...because he's really good. Enjoy watching him in Pullman while you can. |
