California Dreamin'

10:32 AM Thu, Feb 28, 2008 |

There's a lot on the line tonight as Washington State squares off against California. The Cougs can clinch an opening round bye in the conference tournament and all but guarantee a trip to the NCAA's (no conference team has been selected by the committee with a .500 league record). Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds.

Just as Arizona was on Saturday, the Golden Bears have their backs to the wall. They are 6-8 in the conference (15-10 overall), desperate for a victory. Plus, they'll be playing for a season sweep of WSU (winning the first meeting 69-64 on January 31st), which should give them a little more motivation.

The key for the Cougars is shutting down Ryan Anderson. The sophomore forward averages 21 points and ten rebounds per game (he put up 27 tallies and nine boards in the first game against Wazzu). He's registered a double-double in his last three games and five of his last six. Not to mention...he's one of the best free throwers in the Pac-10 making 88% of his shots.

In fact, the entire Cal team is good at making free throws. They rank seventh in the country, shooting nearly 78% from the line (the Cougars shoot 73%). If it's close late in the game that can be a problem.

Here's some good news: The Bears win more on the road than they do at home. California is 2-5 in Berkley during conference play (they're 10-6 overall at home).

A couple of fun facts: Derrick Low needs just two three-pointers to make him the sixth player in school history to land 200 triples in their career.

Taylor Rochestie has scored in double figures in five straight games, averaging 16 points a contest over that time period (he had 14 points and four assists in the first game against California).

P.S. Going to football...I finally had a chance to check out results from the NFL Scouting Combine. Alex Brink and Husain Abdullah were the only Cougars invited.

Brink (a projected second-day pick according to his profile on NFL.com) did well. He was a "top performer" in three drills: Vertical jump (28 inches, sixth best among QB's), broad jump (9'4", third best among QB's), and 20-yard shuttle (4.19, the best among QB's).

Alex Brink...drafted? I never thought I'd see the day.
