February 2008 ArchivesWow! That's all I can say about Washington State's performance Thursday night against California. Good defense: check (the Cougars allowed only 49 points). Good offense: check (shot 53% from the field, 66.7% in the second half on 14-21 shooting). Good win: check (nothing like a little revenge). Now, they'll need to do the same thing to get past Stanford on Saturday. ...There's a lot on the line tonight as Washington State squares off against California. The Cougs can clinch an opening round bye in the conference tournament and all but guarantee a trip to the NCAA's (no conference team has been selected by the committee with a .500 league record). Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds. ...It was only a matter of time before Tony Bennett's name started getting tossed around for "high profile" coaching jobs. Kelvin Sampson's resignation/firing at Indiana has opened the door earlier than anyone expected. The question is...will he stay or will he go? ...Defense can only take you so far...especially when you're not making your shots (I thought "troubleshooting" was clever). Saturday night's game against Arizona is a prime example. The Cougars shot a miserable 34% from the floor, 28% in the first half alone (the 22 points were the fewest in the opening stanza by WSU at home this year). The scary thing is...despite the poor shooting performance, the Cougars were still in the game with about two ... It's no surprise that Washington State prides itself on defense (after last night's game Tony Bennett emphasized the fact that this team can't win if it isn't solid on the defensive end). The Cougars held Arizona State to 47 points, 21 tallies below their season average (ASU shot only 33% from the field). WSU will need a similar game plan against Arizona on Saturday (they average 72 points per game). ...Cougar fans...don't take offense to the title. I love Beasley Coliseum and I love the rowdy crowds that have shown up all year (and (hopefully) will the rest of the way). The fact of the matter is...Pac-10 teams are having a tough time at home. ...So, when I decide to highlight Kyle Weaver's latest achievements (my last blog, It's Kyle Weaver's Time To Shine), what does he do? He scored five points (on 1-of-6 shooting from the field) against Oregon State. As always, when one player is off, someone else steps up (Taylor Rochestie scored a career high 24). ...No offense to Oregon State fans, but there's not much to say about Thursday's game against the Beavers. OSU has the chance to become the first Pac-10 team to go winless in conference play (they're currently 0-11). The Cougars should have no problem with the Beavers, especially if Kyle Weaver stays hot. ...I was really hoping Washington State would pull off the upset against UCLA, but didn't really expect it. The Cougars now find themselves in a hole...and in a "must win" against USC on Saturday. ...I think I've become a spoiled Cougar basketball fan. After being swept by California and Stanford last week (the first time Wazzu was swept under Tony Bennett), I was heartbroken. My invincible team was anything but invincible. But, after I really thought about it (with some help from my roommate), I was quickly brought back to earth. ...Yikes! What happened to the Cougars Thursday night? In my last blog I said the Cougars would cover the spread (9 1/2 points) against California (I truly believed that). If they turn around with a similiar performance today against Stanford, as Taylor Rochestie put it, "It'll be a long season." ... |
