Washington State looked less-than-stellar against UCLA on Saturday afternoon (Aron Baynes especially). Instead of dwelling on the past, let's turn to the future. WSU will look to "prove their worth" as the Oregon schools roll into Pullman this week. The Cougars play Oregon State first (thankfully). The Beavers are the worst team in the Pac-10 (sorry OSU fans...you should probably start looking forward to the baseball season if you haven't already). They're so bad that a banner on the schools athletic website reads: "Warning: Underestimating us has dire consequences." Oregon State is still winless in the conference (0-4). On average, they've lost to Pac-10 opponents by 13 points per game. Overall, the Beavers have lost six straight and haven't scored more than 65 points during the skid (their lowest output was 46 points against Stanford). On the flipside, OSU does several things well. They are second in the conference in rebounding, averaging more than 38 boards per game (the Cougs average 30 a game). The Beavers also protect the ball. In three of their last four games, Oregon State has turned the ball over ten times or less. With that said, the Cougars should roll (and get some confidence back...not that I think much was lost in the first place). The Ducks will be a much different story on Sunday (that's right, Sunday). Washington State hasn't beat Oregon since February 15, 2001 (a 13 game losing streak). It's hard to tell which Ducks team will show up this weekend. It's been a roller coaster ride for Oregon in 2007-08. They were ranked in the preseason Top 15 in both major polls, but lost to St. Mary's, Nebraska, Oakland, and Arizona State (although the Sun Devils are the biggest surprise so far in conference). Again, on the other hand, the Ducks are undefeated (3-0) against teams in the AP Top 25 this year. Needless to say, Oregon always poses problems for Washington State. The scariest thing the Ducks bring to the table is plenty of three point shooters. Maarty Leunen, Tajuan Porter, Malik Hairston and Bryce Taylor are good from beyond the arc. The Ducks landed 23-of-50 three balls combined in their two wins over WSU last year. Washington State will need to slow Oregon's attack if they expect to win. I'm a believer (call me gullible if you want) that WSU can go undefeated at home this year. We'll see starting this week. Milestone Watch: Derrick Low needs just three points to reach 1,000 for his career. That would make him the 28th player in WSU history to reach the mark (the most recent was Thomas Kelati who played from 2002-05). Coming into this week, Kyle Weaver has 904 points. |
