Reason To Stay

9:42 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007 |

Thanksgiving Break starts on Friday for students at Washington State University. Thousands of kids will head in thousands of different directions. But, they should delay their departure...for the Cougars sake.

The Wazzu men's basketball squad faces Idaho on Friday night. The football squad then takes on Oregon State on Saturday.

That's a dream double-header (as far as I'm concerned) and I'll tell you why.

The basketball squad is the 9th ranked team in the country (that should be enough right there, because that doesn't happen everyday in Pullman). And, it's the Battle of the Palouse on the hardwood (not sure if they use the nickname for basketball, but it helps my cause).

Yes, Washington State struggled a little bit against Boise State Tuesday night (they trailed by as many as 13 in the first half), but they exploded for 60 points (pretty impressive for a defensive-minded team) after the break for the win.

Idaho did the exact opposite against Gonzaga. They played well in the first half (they led by four more than halfway through the opening frame), but collapsed after the intermission (they only scored 13 points in the second half).

I'm not trying to knock the Vandals, but it should be an easy win for WSU (there's nothing more fun than a victory).

As for the football team...they're fighting for their lives (and a spot in a bowl game).

A win on Saturday moves them one step closer to their postseason goals (they'll be 5-4). If we've learned anything this year, the Cougs play well at home (especially in front of a rowdy crowd).

If everyone takes off, Wazzu's home field advantage disappears (maybe that's a little overdramatic, but it's sort of true). Bobby Byrd told me today at practice that the Cougar faithful who stick around will be noisy enough to make a difference (just imagine how much better it would be if they sold the place out). Bill Doba made it very clear that he wants students to stay.

If you like hard-nosed, rock 'em sock 'em football then this is a perfect match up (not trying to make light of a serious situation, but take OSU's hit on Jake Locker for example). They'll play football the way it's supposed to be played.

Are you convinced?

If not, here's my final effort...

What else do you have to do? Eat, play video games, shop, spend time with family (Uncle Harry really isn't that cool)?

The Cougars need your help. Don't let them down!

The guilt trip is officially over.

Other Notes
The men's basketball team introduced its 2008 recruiting class on Wednesday. Marcus Capers, Michael Harthun, Klay Thompson, James Watson and Nick Witherill will all be in Pullman next year. Tony Bennett told me the key with this recruiting class is how they'll develop. He's hoping they'll turn into the next "Weaver/Low/Cowgill/Haremling/Henry" type class.
