Jim Sterk (WSU Athletic Director) made it very clear today that he is not going to comment on the search for Wazzu's new head coach, but did say he wants someone in place by the first of the year. That means the speculation continues. It sounds like several candidates have been contacted (one may be meeting with the school next week), others don't want to comment, and another name is added to an already long list. Here's the update: Many people forget that WSU President Elson Floyd once worked at Eastern Washington University. That might mean good things for Paul Wulff (Eastern Head Coach). The two were there at the same time, but only for a short time (Floyd was at the university from 1990-93; Wulff started as a volunteer assistant in 1993). We'll see if that plays a role. CSTV says they've confirmed that John L. Smith will meet with Washington State next week to discuss the coaching gig. As I reported before (Update 3), Mike Price was contacted by Bill Moos earlier this week. Today, he told the El Paso Times that he has no formal meetings scheduled with WSU. When asked if he'd been contacted about the job Bob Gregory (Cal Defensive Coordinator) jokingly told The Daily Californian that, "he never checks his messages." Jim Michalczik (Cal Offensive Coordinator) was also mentioned as a potential candidate, but Gregory seems to be getting all of the media attention in Berkeley. It's expected that Nebraska will name Bo Pelini (LSU Defensive Coordinator) as their new head coach. That means Turner Gill (Buffalo Head Coach) should still be on the market. The Sporting News is reporting that Dirk Koetter (Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator) "probably isn't in the running." Another name is being thrown into the mix: Greg Olson, 44, St. Louis Rams Offensive Coordinator: A Richland, Washington native. He went to Spokane Falls Community College (1981-82) before playing quarterback at Central Washington. Olson became a grad assistant at Washington State in 1987. He became offensive coordinator at CWU (1990-93) then coached at Idaho from 1994-96. Olson has spent the last six years in the NFL (it's his first year as offensive coordinator for the Rams). His wife Lissa Gray is from Spokane and was a track and field athlete at WSU. Stay tuned for another update... Although Mike price has been soiled from his Southern expierence, he does have the abilities to bring WSU back into prominence. He is also well aquainted with the Spokane Area, and WSU and has strong ties in the State of Washington. He should do well recruiting in the Northwest.
I personally thought Mike Price didn't have a chance at coming back (too many people were upset about the way he left), but it sounds more and more like he's a legit candidate.
Price definitely knows the area and should be able to recruit to Pullman (he's proved he can do it in the past). Like I've mentioned before, Pullman is a unique place and it takes knowing that to succeed.
I would support Price if he came back (he took us to two Rose Bowls...I'd be interested to see if he can do it again).
