There's already an update! Some of the guys I thought might be candidates have permission to look into the job (or any job for that matter), another wants to stay focused on his current position, and another might be going in a different direction. I've even added more names to the list. Here's what I've found out: It sounds like Montana's Bobby Hauck is one of the favorites for the Colorado State job. Sonny Lubick was in charge of the Rams for 15 years, but was fired on Tuesday. Hauck was an assistant coach at the University of Colorado from 1995-98. I asked Eastern's Paul Wulff about the WSU coaching gig at practice on Tuesday. He said, "Obviously, it's my alma mater and I'm flattered, but..." He wants to stay focused on the D-IAA playoffs. There are some who question if he can make the jump from EWU to WSU. As for Bob Gregory and Jim Michalczik (California coordinators), both have permission to search elsewhere. In an article by the San Francisco Chronicle, Jeff Tedford (Cal head coach) is quoted as saying, "I would never, ever hold a coach back from looking into an opportunity that they feel could better their career." The Golden Bears still have a rivalry game against Stanford, so you might not hear much from them until it's over. I'm going to throw a couple more names into the mix (both have ties to the state): Kasey Dunn, 38, Baylor Assistant Head Coach: He was born in San Diego, California, but went to high school in Poulsbo, Washington. Dunn played wide receiver at Idaho from 1987-91. He also served as an assistant for the Vandals in 1995. Dunn also coached at WSU from 1998-2002 (he served as assistant head coach under Mike Price from 2001-02). Baylor fired head coach Guy Morriss after the season, so it's not clear what will happen to Dunn (a release from the school says he and the other assistants "will work together to provide leadership of the program until the search is complete."). Dave Christensen, 44, Missouri Offensive Coordinator: He was born and raised in Washington (from Everett) and played college football at Western Washington (graduated in 1985). Christensen then received his Masters at EWU and coached there from 1986-87. He also coached at Spokane Falls in 1988. His coaching resume also includes time at Washington (1989-90) and Idaho State (1990-91). Another interesting twist...WSU President Elson Floyd used to be at Missouri (where Christensen is now) which could play into things. To my buddy "k west" who dropped a comment on my previous blog (check out -- Doba's Replacement? for more information). I agree that Washington State needs to look outside of the program for a coach. I feel like most of the guys I've mentioned have enough experience away from Washington State to bring in their own fresh ideas. I think it would be a huge mistake to promote from within (i.e. Mike Levenseller, etc.). The Cougs need a whole new approach. Stay tuned for another update... |
