Remember to say thank you

11:57 AM Wed, May 02, 2007 |

Attending the memorial services of late Edmonds Police Chief David Stern, I remembered a piece of advice someone once gave me.

Say "thank you."

They are two simple words that mean a lot to people who don't often hear them - police officers, teachers and other public servants. Most of those people get into their respective professions to make a difference, not for money. Arguably, many of them are underpaid for the work they do.

Sometimes a simple "thank you" can make their work seem worth it.

And at a time when we're losing teachers and law enforcement can't fill jobs - we need to keep all the good people we have.

Almost 3 weeks ago, my daughter was injured in bicycle accident. She spent over 8 hours in the hospital just having her wounds cleaned. Not to mention 30 stitches in her face, x-rays, ct scans. What really struck me through all this, was that through all her pain, she took the time to get the name of each person who assisted her, x-ray techs, nurses, assitants, the woman who helped her off the street, policemen, etc., and called them by their names, and when they were finished, she thanked each of them. I was stunned....not because she did it, but because I was thinking that if I were in that amount of pain, I'm not sure that I would think to get names and thank these people. The nurse that scrubbed all her wounds said she had never been thanked before. The next day, with her face still swollen, she had me take her to the store to get a thank you card for the woman who picked her up and helped her call the EMT's. I know this is my daughter, and I know I taught her to say "thank you". But she taught me that day, to appreciate the people around us.
