Back to back record winters are rare here in the Inland Northwest. But check out the numbers:
* 80.3 inches of snow so far. (46 inches is the average snowfall for an entire winter in Spokane.)
* 61.5 inches of December snow was the largest ever. The previous record for December snow was 56.9 in 1950.
* 19.4 inches fell on Dec. 17 breaking the previous 24-hour record of 13'' set in 1950.
* 24 inches fell on Dec. 17 & 18; another 6" arrived Christmas Eve.
* 17 inches fell the first week of January with 7 1/2-inches of that falling on Jan. 5.
Last year was the second snowiest winter on record with 92.5" of snowfall - and we didn't see our first significant snow until late January!
Even though I expect the middle portion of this month to be mostly dry we have plenty of winter left to add to our already hefty snowfall numbers.
Stay tuned.

If you're asking about the record for most snowfall in a season, that would be about 93.5". We missed the record last year by 1".

Tom,
As a prior Spokane Valley native and currently living in Shiloh, IL (suburb of St Louis, MO), I am jealous of the last two winters you have had!
However, I 'remember' walking to school in very deep snow as a child at McDonald Elementary in the Valley (1957 & on). No 'snow days, as I remember. I am also very vividly remembering the winter of '68-'69 as I was in CV High School. We finally received the o.k. to where 'nice wool slacks' IF the temperature stayed below 0 degrees that winter! We seemed to get all of our snow that year around the Christmas break and then it just kept piling up until April! We still had snow banks in the backyard of our home and my sister and I layed out in the sun in our swimming suits to tan next to the snowpile in June!
By the way, Virginia Kerr is currently working at KMOV TV, St Louis, MO on the early morning show and she has expressed many times that she was thankful to not live in the snowbelt anymore, but at the same time, was kind of sad to not have snow for Christmas! Another side note, she got engaged this Christmas!
From the jealous former Spokanite's,
Cheers and keep those snow shovels waxed!!

Tom, I always hear about the winter of 68 and how much snow there was. How come that year wasn't mentioned? Just curious.
I heard people were digging themselves out of their homes.
Thanks

Tom, can you and Jason get on the same page with the weather forecast - yours is so much better than his showing less snow - it's like he wants snow and his shows lots more. I prefer to go by yours with the least amount of snow - thanks!
