NADINE WOODWARD: DeLeon's does it up right

3:48 PM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 |

Looking for great authentic Mexican food?

Then search no further than downtown Spokane iinside the popular Heroes and Legends sports bar.

What used to be a side banquet room has been transformed into the eat-in/take-out DeLeon's Downtown Mexican Deli. Yes, the same DeLeon's as the northside deli and grocery on Francis.

Catering to the business crowd and busy shoppers, DeLeon's is the place to drop in before work. Try their fabulous Huevos a la Mexicana (Mexican eggs) for $4.99.

Or stop in for a quick lunch of tacos, burritos, tamales or enchiladas with rice and beans ($7.99).

Better yet, get their wonderfully seasoned meats by the pound, the garlicky Pork Chili Verde is my favorite and a steal at $7.99. Grab a bag of homemade corn tortillas ($2.99); pick from a variety of homemade salsas ($3.99) and feed the entire family.

On my next trip I'm trying the Chili Rellenos, Anaheim Chilies stuffed with cheese, dipped in batter and covered in a spicy red sauce.
If you call ahead on Thursday DeLeon's will even make up a batch of their unbeatable and difficult-to-find ceviche (fish marinated/cooked in lime juice with onion, jalapenos and cilantro) and you can pick it up on Friday.

It's great to scoop up with their homemade tortilla chips.
