« RANDY SHAW: DNR says blame is premature in Valley View Fire |

The newsroom phones rumbled and rang all morning long as viewers called in to complain about "live" coverage of the huge three-alarm Joel building blaze. Most wanted to see their local or national program on tv and not continuous "live" coverage of a fire that brought in all 17 Spokane fire companies. The news department has a community obligation to alert people to a public danger and one that is also changing the traffic patterns of downtown Spokane. It must balance the public's right to know with a viewers expectation to see a regularly scheduled program. But many thought the continuous coverage was overkill. One viewer's protesting emal said: "Are you working on the Guiness Book of Records in the category of stretching a 30 second report on a fire into multiple hours of redundance?" Another said: "As a long time viewer, I must admit I really get tired of you people going over and over and over on a story." Our news department has a commitment to cover a dangerous situation full boar until the danger has passed. Even if that means covering up local television programming. How do you think "live" continuous coverage should be handled? Is the public's right to know more important than entertainment or does news perform over kill in covering such events! Looking forward to hearing from you. 28 CommentsLeave a comment |

Your coverage was probably overkill since there were no injuries/deaths and the entire downtown was not threatened.
Save the big coverage for the big stories...
with Digital TV where you can broadcast multiple Programes i dont se why you can have News Covrage on one channel and regular Programeing on the additional channel and alert viewers for breaking news tune to Krem 2-2.

There is nothing wrong with alerting the community to what is going on. But I definitely agree that lately the coverage has been "overkill". The same thing is said over and over. We get the point. There is enough coverage in the evening reports, etc. to update the community on the changes, etc. You do a great job, but please don't completely cancel the other programming because of a fire.
Thanks.
I think that KREM 2 did a "EXCELLENT" job covering the morning fire downtown. Frankly the only people that are complaining about the coverage this morning, are the freeloaders that stay home all day long, watching t.v. instead of joining the working world, they live off the state, and have basic stations, because the state will not allow them to have cable television. Frankly if you have to miss the Price is Right, or Young and the Restless so be it. You can miss a year of soap operas, and turn them on one day, and pick up right where you left off the year before. Seriously, grow up and become involved members of the community that are concerned with what goes on in the city. You are the ones that chose to live here. If you don't like it then "MOVE", out of the state, so as a taxpayer I don't have to support you anymore!
I think we could miss The Young and the Restless for a day to keep track of a devastating fire.
*How do you think "live" continuous coverage should be handled?*
I think the coverage could have been recduced to a crawl along the top of the screen, with *verbal updates*,(not necessarily video) during the commercial breaks. Remember, this was not "9/11", it was a local fire. It would be nice if we could keep some perspective. I appreciate the coverage of local events, but continuous, hour after hour of coverage of a reporter standing in the smoke saying "it's still burning, back to you in the studio" is simply not necessary.
Yea, nobody wants to hear about it until or unless it happens to you. Those who complain wouldn't do so if there was a fire threatening their home: "Oh, by the way, there's a fire next door to you. Film at eleven!. Now back to "As the Stomach Turns."
so, since when is a coverage of a large fire in Down Town where many of us work, anything other than a right to know. Did you also complain about the coverage of the valley fire. What happens is policy of coverage is changed? Then theres something you think ought to be covered, will you be calling in again?
Keep doing what your doing krem!!!
Stop repeating the same things over and over, if there's nothing new to add to the story, STOP! Every station in town is paranoid that they are going to get scooped, it just makes you all look small town, and makes me change the channel.
Tell them to stick it in their ear!!
Today's event, as well as the Valley View fire would have been much better covered if KREM had interrupted scheduled coverage only to provide updates necessary to ensure the safety of the public. A text crawl at the top or bottom screen could be used between these updates, thus serving the need to keep the public informed without interrupting regularly scheduled programming.
KREM, more than another other local station, seems to consciously exploit local disasters for advertising opportunities. I've noticed that after these endlessly repetitive live coverage events KREM then advertises that they were the only ones to provide this level of coverage, like it is something to be proud of.
Endlessly repeating the same facts over and over, repetitively grilling the unfortunate public safety personnel you talk to because you have nothing else to say, and other tactics you use to stay on the air when there is nothing to report diminishes the professionalism of your staff while it deprives your viewers of the shows they loyally tune in to watch.
I think it is important for stations to thoroughly cover major events like the Joel fire. Today I had to go to St. Luke's Rehabilitation facility. Your coverage enabled me to know how much time I needed and what areas to avoid.
In my opinion there is too much "entertainment" news in a world where we desperately need to know what is actually happening. Please more hard news and less entertainment. Yes your coverage of today's fire was correct.
Thank you for your great coverage of the fire I
appreciate all your hard work dedication and great coverage.I would have watched it all day if I could have.
Keep it up and dont let cranky viewers who live by their soaps get you down.

Live for a couple of hours maybe....30 minute updates?.......There is enough coverage and then there is definitely too much!!! I think that people are complaining because it is so obvious to the public what the motive is when you are viewing it on television. A different perspective than the hard working people that bring us the news. They are there and we are not and quite frankly don't want to be. I can see it from both sides.
It's overkill.
KREM you made the right choice on doing what you did. Anyone that didn't like it must not care about our city. If something big is happening in our own town most will want to know up to the minute on what is going on.
To tell you the truth I don't watch the news or TV much, maybe once a month if I don't have anything else going on. Today I stayed on your channel as much as I could and I really admire your work on broadcasting this devastating fire that WILL change the look and feel of this midsized town.
I thank you for letting us in on what was going on and the information you provided. People need to know soaps are not real unlike this fire. I feel sorry for all of those that feel you did the wrong move. Peoples lives were at stake today and you would rather see a show based on a false reality than knowing that everyone is safe and that we lost an icon in this town.
I know Joe at Dorian Studios will rebuild, they are a very strong minded group of people. It is really too bad to see us lose such an old building today.
Thanks again,
Ross
KUDOS to Mr.Cliff Ledevo who gave an exacting description of KREM 2 news. The National Enquirer mentality that is professed by the KREM 2 news team and what they profess as coverage has become nothing more than fodder for a bunch of elitist prima donnas. Examples: "KREM was first to report'" KREM was first on the scene" "our exclusive interview", who cares!
As with the valley fire, the Joel fire showed how difficult it is for our local channels to get the "latest information" right. In the valley fire each station gave different "latest information" concerning mandatory evacation areas. It is also ironic that all web pages give conflicting information concerning which streets were closed and for how long. The public relies on accurate information. Do you have a suggestion on where we can get it?
Ticker on top of screen or commercial break is enough.
I think and up date every half and hour will get the job done,[If i want more i pull it up on my computer.]
The lady that said all your views are free loaders and od to go to work! Is out of line!
At that time of day 75% of the viewer are older retired people . Like myself ,did work very hard all our life. Her coment was not nice! ted
I think you could have handled it with break-in's to the programming every 10-15 minutes to update the status unless something major changed. That being said, I'd rather have too much coverage than too little.
Also, Randy, it's full "bore" not full boar. ;-)
KREM did an amazing job of covering the Joel building story. I think it is a shame that someone is complaining about missing "The Price Is Right" or a meaningless soap opera for one day. How pathetic is that. Instead, why can't we be amazed and feel fortunate that we got to watch the fire fighters do such an amazing job. They were risking their lives in the heat and the unsteadiness of the old building, making sure that they could save as much as they could. We should recognize what an amazing job they do, and quite honestly be thankful we got to see what they deal with day in and day out keeping us safe. I know someone who works at the Joel building, and am glad to hear what is going on, no matter how long it takes. To have those people sitting on their butts, complaining about overkill, keep it to yourself. You would be much more selfish if it involved you and you would want to see what was going on all the time. Stop being so lazy and whining about something so meaningless...there were firefighters lives at stake yesterday...maybe that isn't a big enough story for you though. If you don't like it, change the channel...oh wait...that is too much work for these people, and would take away something for them to be upset about. Thank God the "Price Is Right" is back on today.
What about updating at commercial break or running the ticker...continuous coverage tends to get turned in my house.

How DARE you! Some of us work nights or swings or have vacation days. That means that the time we ARE at home relaxing from OUR work, we want to see relaxing tv, or something to unwind with. Extensive coverage that is certainly 'overkill' affects our schedules or wind down time.
OVERKILL IS OVERKILL IS OVERKILL, JUST LIKE YOUR BREAKS DURING THE NEWS< YOUR BREAKS LAST LONGER THEN ANY OF YOUR NEWS SEGMENTS< SAME O SAME O W? ALL STATIONS OVERKILL IS OVERKILL IS OVERKIL IS OVERKILl
I think KREM did a fantastic job.

Furthermore, I would point out that Krem2 is passing on income by going to extended live coverage. This is good for the community and I commend them for this choice. For those who live by soap operas and game shows, my heart goes out to you(-:(tongue firmly in cheek). Not only does Krem2 do more charitable work in the community, increasingly they are the ONLY choice for locally-focused coverage. (Randy and Nadine have excellent chemistry that makes them very likable and trustworthy)

See what you people aren't realizing that it doesn't matter if there isn't anyone hurt or the community or down town is in danger or not. There are Fire Fighters, Men and Women, and me being a Daughter of two Fire Fighters, we as family members want to know how it is going because we can't be down on the front lines. Isn't that how you would want it to be if your family was out there and fighting something for the COMMUNITY?
The point is, is that it could turn deadly at any time and take the life of someone that could possibly be at your house when it burns down. So don't you wan't all those Men and Women at your house fighting your fire or helping you out in a time of need in case of a emergency??
