I attended a news conference Thursday afternoon where both Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich and Spokane Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick adamantly asked all the local media to stop using the phrase "hog-tied". KREM 2 NEWS has been using the phrase "hog-tied" to describe the manner in which Spokane Valley Police Officers restrained suspect Trent Yohe on May 1. We were using the phrase "hog-tied" to describe the manner of restraint because we believed that was an accurate description to our viewers of someone being held with their hands and feet bound together. We also felt the phrase, while being slang, still helped viewers visualize the restraint. In today's news conference, we were shown an example of "hog-tieing" and an example of "hobbling", another method of restraint that also involves tieing the hands and feet together. However, the angle at which the subject is restrained in the "hog-tieing" is far more severe than what is involved in "hobbling", where the legs are at more of a 90-degree angle from the body. KREM 2 NEWS will comply with this request from law enforcement and use the phrase "hobble" to describe the method of restraint that was used on Yohe. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

Very Politically correct of you to bow to authority. Will you be measuring the angle of the legs before determining which term to use.
whatever you call it it's usually still excessive force. typical of the police.
KREM, you disappoint me. "Hogtied" sounds like the proper term to me. Don't BOW to the cops...Report to the MASSES...Let the cops have their say but that doesn't mean you have to "tone it down" for the sake of the cops retputation. How many Ottos and Yohes does it take?
