So this is what March Madness is all about!? Pulling your kids out of school and skipping out of work to watch basketball in March. I could get used to this! The Wild Weasel down the street has pretty good food but I'm pretty sure today's lunchtime crowd - mostly dressed in crimson and gray - was just a little larger than a normal Thursday afternoon, and it had nothing to do with the menu. I imagine the Weasel provided a pretty good indication of what most other bars in town looked like today. A good mix of those of us enjoying a long lunch and those who counted today as a Cougar holiday, all agonizing over each missed opportunity in the first half and jumping out of our seats as the Cougs came roaring back in the second half to post WSU's first tournament victory since 1983. I know this is all old-hat to area GU fans, so you'll have to excuse us if we seem to be enjoying this experience a little too much. After struggling through most of the first half, the Cougs hit their last 5 shots - including the play of the game, when Kyle Weaver stole an inbounds pass with 3 seconds on the clock and slammed it home as time expired. Weaver's great individual effort seemed to give the sluggish Cougs the spark they needed and their sharp-shooting continued as they hit 7 of their first 8 field goal attempts in the second half. While the whole squad seemed re-energized in the second half, it was Ivory Clark who really stole the show, as he emphatically reintroduced himself as a key contributor on both ends of the floor. Practically missing in action the last few weeks, Clark's energy was certainly a welcome sight as the Cougs pulled away from Oral Roberts in the second half of this opening round game, earning a Round 2 matchup with Vanderbilt on Saturday. Vanderbilt is the #6 seed out of the tough SEC. The Commodores scored an impressive victory in their first round matchup over George Washington, 77-44. Let's hope the Cougs, having withstood their first-half jitters today, will put together a complete game on St Patrick's Day and continue their march to Atlanta. Go Cougs!
