March 2007 ArchivesHigh temperatures reaching into the lower 60's will make this one of the warmest days of the year so far. ...The snow has melted, the bouncing balls have been put away, and the anticipation of another beautiful Coeur d' Alene summer is already in the air. ...It's shaping up to be the warmest day in the Spokane area in a week and a half with afternoon highs around 60 degrees. ...A change in the weather brings dry, sunny weather to Spokane today with a warming trend. ...Rumor has it that in the coming days WSU will be announcing a new deal for Tony Bennett that will raise his salary from the bottom of Pac-10 basketball coaches to somewhere in the middle. It has also been announced that about $400,000 dollars has been raised over the last month by the grassroots e-mail campaign recently launched by a Cougar Alumni group. Honestly, could Dick Bennett have possibly imagined this kind of turn-around wh... A weather system will be slow to move out of the area today. ...After a grey, wet weekend in the Spokane area.....sunshine and blue skies help us head out the door in the right mood. ...Temperatures warm above normal for the next couple of days. ...The Spokane area is short on rainfall so far this year. ...As its cold on this first morning of Spring with temps in the mid-upper 20's. ...The magic hour is 5:07 tonight. ...The warm weather that developed this weekend lingers today with a change tomorrow. ...It's 3:39 AM and I've been up for two hours, unable to sleep for no reason in particular. I woke up with several thoughts bouncing around in my head and just couldn't seem to rest, so here I sit listening to my "Mellow" playlist on iTunes, hoping it will lull me back to sleep. Yes, I listen to Enya...but I'll make up for it later with green beer and the Dropkick Murphys. Inevitably, I'll get tired and crawl back in bed just before ... Gonzaga struggled all night Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and was unable to really threaten the favored Indiana Hoosiers who executed their game plan very well. Coming into the game it was clear the Hosiers were going to rely on three point shooting, scrappy defense, and the inside play of DJ White, and Thursday night Indiana had success at all three of these aspects and beat the Zags 70-57 to end the Bulldog’s year with ... The overnight and early morning rain in the Spokane area is associated with a warm front that will push afternoon highs back above normal today. ...So this is what March Madness is all about!? Pulling your kids out of school and skipping out of work to watch basketball in March. I could get used to this! The Wild Weasel down the street has pretty good food but I'm pretty sure today's lunchtime crowd - mostly dressed in crimson and gray - was just a little larger than a normal Thursday afternoon, and it had nothing to do with the menu. The snow has melted. Birds are chirping. Pompous dopes are freezing their butts off on the way to work in their convertibles. All undeniable signs that spring is nearly upon us. And now, Cougs everywhere are suddenly falling ill, unable to make it to work on Thursday - or at the very least, planning long lunch meetings, tipping off...er...starting promptly at 11:40. Cougar Nation is generally a faithful bunch but I can't imagine many of u... Time for Jeremy to go. By setting the tone with Koren Robinson, Holmgren and Ruskell will be forced to let Jeremy Stevens go after this latest arrest. And I think it will be a good thing. The last thing our team needs is an added distraction from a guy who since opening his big mouth before the Superbowl a year ago, has caused nothing but trouble for the Seahawks. Buh Bye Jeremy, time for you to go to the Raiders, where all careers go to ... The official start of Spring is less than a week away. Plenty of sunshine today makes for a pleasant day weatherwise in the Spokane area. Afternoon highs will be near normal at 47. Temperatures will be down right cold Thursday morning with clear skies....down to 26. A warming trend highlights the weekend forecast as highs push into the upper 50's with partly cloudy skies. ...While temperatures will be noticeably cooler than the past few days....morning lows and afternoon highs will still running above normal. ...The NCCA Selection Committee looked kindly upon Gonzaga because of their brutal non-conference schedule and solid play down the stretch, giving them a number 10 seed, but more importantly placing their first round game in Sacramento. Coming into Sunday it was very difficult to say how the Zags were being looked at by the selection committee, but based on their seed and site placement it is clear the NCAA rewarded the Zags for their tough non-... Alot of us are running about an hour short of sleep today....and weatherwise....a largely grey day is ahead with windy conditions thru early afternoon. Rain showers at daybreak are moving south. ...The rebuilding process of the WSU men's basketball program still may not be complete but they took a monumental step on Sunday afternoon, rewarded with a 3-seed in the 2007 NCAA Tournament after an amazing regular season. The Cougs will play Oral Roberts University on Thursday in Sacramento; their first tournament appearance since 1994. The game will be played just two weeks shy of four years since Dick Bennett was hired as the archit... A simple law of physics. For USC last night - particularly in the first half - it meant that seemingly every shot hoisted skyward found it's way back to Earth safely through the hoop. For the Cougs - presumably sky-high after their 5th win in a row over UW the night before - it meant that their Pac-10 title hopes came crashing down in one fell swoop. I always hated physics... ...since we are seeing a wide variety of weather lately...and that will continue. ...The Cougs last won a Pac-10 Tournament game in 1989. I was enjoying my second semester as a freshman in 1989 - several pounds and one sweeeeeet mullet ago. Another game, another monkey off the back of a resurgent program. What a fantastic team effort tonight, capped off by a near-perfect second half. Jon Brockman deserves all the accolades he's received - but give it up for Aron Baynes who beat him up and shut him down late in the... Afternoon temperatures return to near normal readings ...some 10 degrees cooler than the past couple of days. ...Last year, the Cougs' two-game sweep over the Dawgs was THE highlight of the season. This year, it was one of many in an improbably glorious regular season. Can they possibly make it 3-0 for the season? We'll find out tomorrow night. ...A few weeks back a co-worker and I placed a serious goocher on the Cougs by debating how far they would make it in the tournament. Throwing caution to the wind, she went so far as to ask me if I'd put the Cougs in the final four of my office bracket. The last time I made such a grievous breach in Cougar etiqette was September 6, 2003 in Notre Dame Stadium when at halftime with a 19-3 lead, I turned to my buddy Rooster and said "Ther... That was one for the ages....as clear skies to the east at daybreak lit up clouds over Spokane to make for a spectacular sight. ...In a game pitting the best two teams in the WCC who had spilt the season series and both needed a win to make the NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs continued their amazing play and beat the second seeded Broncos 77-68 to advance to their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament. For the first time in years Gonzaga was in the same boat as their championship game opponent, needing a win to assure themselves a trip to the dance, but the Zags showed no sign... Mild temperatures will be with us all week long with a breakup type pattern. Playing San Diego for the second consecutive game, Gonzaga overcame a slow start at the offensive end by rebounding and defending well on their way to a 88-70 victory in the WCC semifinals. The Zags excelled in the areas necessary to win championships on Sunday night and got their offense going midway through the first half to help them pull away from the Toreros. ...This surely must be the last coldest morning of Winter.....as of this writing....Spokane has seen a low of 18.....ten degrees below normal but well off the record low of -4....that was in 1891. Coeur d' Alene hit 1 above this morning. Snow develops this evening with an advisory at 6 PM. Overnight snowfalls should be in the 1"-3" inch range. Following that system, a ridge of high pressure builds in with a warming trend...highs by Saturday a... Winter still has a little teeth left to its bite with snow showers lingering this morning. ... |
