Signs of Spring

7:45 AM Thu, Feb 15, 2007 |

Sure, snow mixed with rain overnight and we woke up to some slush...but temperatures could hit 50 over the next couple of days.
The overnight rain and snow amounted to .31 hundreds of an inch of liquid precipitation...which pushed the monthly total above normal...though the yearly deficeit so far is a bit over an inch. We'll cut into that number later today with more rain and the start of a warming trend. A warm front will arrive Friday riding a ridge of high pressure that will bring a couple of dry days to the region. The tough part of the forecast is how much fog and low cloud cover will form in the overnight hours and how persistent will it be. Calling for sunny skies of late has proved to be folly with a temperature inversion keeping the low clouds around. So whats different this time?.....not all that much. The angle of the sun is slightly higher and the bulk of the valley snowpack has melted, so the lower atmosphere doesn't cool quite as efficiently. Still...the ground is saturated and its fog season...so questions abound. Its going to take some wind to mix the atmophere...keeping the low clouds from getting to thick...and if that happens and the sun is out all afternoon.....50 or warmer is reasonable.
