February 2007 ArchivesWednesday night on KREM 2 News at 6:00, we aired an investigation into the criminal records of local school bus drivers and monitors for Laidlaw, which handles transportation for Spokane Public Schools. We found more than a dozen employees have criminal backgrounds. The question we posed is: as a parent, would you want anyone with a criminal record driving your child to and from school? So far, the response has been mixed. ...Mother nature is a day early....as February ends with a "ferocious' early morning snowfall in the Spokane area.. ...Gonzaga won another WCC title Monday by winning at San Diego and getting some help from Pepperdine who upset co-leader Santa Clara, giving the Zags the outright league title and top seed in the conference tournament in Portland next week. With Gonzaga’s seniors slowed and their effectiveness limited by injury and illness the younger players stepped up to carry the load against San Diego and continue the program’s rule in the WCC. ...So far Spokane's morning low is 20 degrees....our coldest temperature in more than 3 weeks. ...Generally cloudy weather with rain and snow showers will persist this week and next. ...Gonzaga’s overtime win on Saturday afternoon at the University of San Francisco, along with Santa Clara’s loss at Loyola Marymount, put the Zags back into a first place tie with Santa Clara in the WCC race. The Bulldog’s must win on Monday at San Diego to guarantee at least a tie for the regular season league crown and gain the top seed in the conference tournament next weekend in Portland. ...Recent snowfall may just be the tip of the iceberg with more to come over the next seven days. ...In case you haven't heard, Josh Brown was given the franchise tag by the Seahawks. Anybody who read my blog at any time over the past season knows how much I like Josh Brown. He was the one solid player for the Seahawks this past year. I think this is a good move for this team. Now we wait and see if the Seahawks Front Office learned anything from last year. Hopefully the next move is to shore up the secondary and the offensiv...
I've gotten several emails over the last few months about why our coverage of the WSU men's basketball team hasn't matched our coverage of Gonzaga's team. ...While snow showers are falling...accumulating snow is hard to come by this morning in the Spokane area. ...The wet, windy pattern has moved south of the Inland Northwest today as we look for dry conditions with some sunshine. Temperatures have dropped below freezing....morning temps locally are the coldest we've seen in more than two weeks ....which says more about how mild it has been lately overnight...rather than how cold it is. So far...the morning low is 28...normal is 27. None the less...Winter is staging a comeback. The storm track takes... Monday night was the final home game for Sean Mallon and Derek Raivio, and the entire team gave the seniors the type of effort they deserved in their final home game as the Zags jumped the Pilots early and coasted to an easy 20 point victory. Coming off consecutive losses and fighting for position in the conference tournament the Bulldogs needed to pick up the win for the team’s sake, but Monday’s win was even more necessary because the team’... A wind advisory for the Spokane area is in effect thru 10 AM this morning...though wind speeds are trending slowly downward after peaking at 4AM with a gust of 40 MPH. ...A Pacific system rolls thru the region today into Tuesday morning with widespread rain possibly mixing with snow locally overnight...followed by strong SW winds tomorrow afternoon. ...Gonzaga gave the Memphis Tigers all they could handle Saturday afternoon at the arena before falling in overtime 78-77. Despite being severely undermanned due to foul trouble and injuries against the naturally talented and super athletic Tigers, the Zags played extremely hard and showed a great deal of heart, but just could not get the bounces they needed to beat nationally ranked Memphis. ...Sunshine returns.... combining with mild temperatures to make for a very pleasant Friday forecast. ...Sure, snow mixed with rain overnight and we woke up to some slush...but temperatures could hit 50 over the next couple of days. Some of our KREM.com visitors may have questions about our investigation of Deputy Mayor Jack Lynch after reading the city’s response to KREM 2 NEWS questions and the Spokesman-Review’s questions about Lynch being spotted in High Bridge Park and his subsequent lengthy medical leave. ...Roses look even more vibrant against a gray backdrop...or so I've been told! The Santa Clara Broncos came into the Kennel Monday night firing on all cylinders while Gonzaga played most of the game looking mentally and physically tired after a long weekend of adversity. The Broncos jumped on the Zags early and played a nearly flawless game on their way to ending the Bulldog’s home court win streak and more importantly taking over first place in the WCC. ...Patience is a virtue. Today's morning fog and low clouds should break to the point where we see partly sunny skies this afternoon....and while rain returns late Wednesday into Thursday....the higher angle of the sun and a building ridge of high pressue arriving for Friday and Saturday should make for for the nicest weather of the year so far this weekend. Highs will range from the mid 40's to 50....depending on how much fog forms up....but t... Low clouds continue to dominate the weather outlook for most of the week locally...and a mild southwesterly flow will keep temperatures near normal. This pattern can generate areas of dense fog and that is the case this morning in the Columbia Basin with an advisory thru 10 AM. In Spokane today...a little drizzle or a passing shower is possible......much the same Tuesday. Valentines Day looks dry with the possibility of a some sunshine befo... The Bulldogs ran their incredible home court win streak to fifty games and avenged an early season loss to St. Mary’s with a 60-49 win Saturday night. Gonzaga played with high energy and passion all game long, never letting up their defensive intensity that keyed the victory and kept the Zags in a first place tie in the WCC. ...Heavy frost and freezing fog overnight with pockets of freezing rain this morning. ...Our Two on Your Side investigation found 159 complaints against Spokane County's 911 system over a 2-year period, from November, 2004 to November, 2006. About half the complaints were verified. The system's director showed us numbers indicating complaints last year made up .0001 of all calls. That's one ten-thousandth of one percent. Very tiny. But if one of those complaints is yours, and it's a valid complaint, the number looms larger.... Though it will be wet at times over the next 7 days. ...A wet weather pattern returns to the area with the chance of rain at times into next week. In their fifth game in ten days, including their third road game in six days, the Zags failed to perform in the areas where they have been best all year long, leading to a 67-61 loss to Loyola Marymount. Usually when a team struggles in the aspects of the game they are best at it is a sign of fatigue, both mental and physical, which was probably the case Monday night as the Zags had played five games in a week and half and made two separate C... The warm spell continues.....today's expected high of 40 would be Spokane's warmest day in two weeks. ...At least by February standards...today's forecast high of 39 would be the first above normal high in Spokane in some 9 days. ...The Bulldogs used two big runs in the second half, on their way to outscoring the Waves by 21 points in the second period, to turn a close ballgame at half time into a fairly easy 82-57 road win. While the game was far from perfect, the Zags did many things very well and picked up another important road victory on their quest to another WCC regular season title. ...Spokane Sam is back in his hole this morning without seeing his shadow as the persistent low clouds of late are still here. If the rodent comes up for air this afternoon ....he should see a some sun and his shadow. ...After a slow start in which Stanford’s size and physical play appeared it would overwhelm Gonzaga, the Bulldogs fought back behind solid contributions throughout the roster. The Cardinal got off to a blistering start shooting the ball and their aggressive defense gave the Bulldogs trouble and got Maples Pavilion rocking, but Gonzaga was able fight through the early adversity and get their biggest road win of the year, and quite possibly their... Low clouds will keep our weather cold and grey for most of this first day of February...partial clearing is possible this afternoon. ... |
