The NFL Can Be A Dirty Business

3:09 PM Fri, Jan 12, 2007 |

The opinions of this blog do not reflect the opinions of KREM.com or KREM.com management.

Right in the middle of a playoff run and a chance to prove that they are a great team despite injuries and shortcomings, Seahawks management has done nothing more than prove that they are a greedy business and don’t care about who they step on. Tim Ruskell, you remember him, he is the one the let Steve Hutchinson go. The Seahawks have decided that they don’t need to return to Cheney this summer because of an impending game in China. So we knew they wouldn’t be here in 2008, but now because those precious millionaires might have to break camp early, they have decided to pull back in 2007.

I have a message for Mr. Ruskell and Seahawks management who have forgotten what we on the east side of the Cascades did for them. KISS MY GRITS. (I can’t swear on the blog) I seem to remember a statewide vote and a grass roots movement in Spokane to save the Seahawks when Ken Bering tried to move them to California. Paul Allen put up the proposition and we passed it to build Qwest Field. Well, now that the stadium is done, it appears the Seahawks have decided they don’t need the east side of the state. It appears we aren’t good enough to warrant a few weeks of time as a home for a training camp. Eastern Washington was nothing more than a springboard to get Qwest Field built and now the Seahawks are listening to the millionaires they employ and have decided that we have seen enough of the Seahawks. Meanwhile we are paying tax dollars for the stadium. Classy move Seahawks.
The businesses around Cheney and Spokane had planned this year for one more training camp, well I guess they will have to bite the bullet because a 9 million dollar running back doesn’t want to get to hot. If the Seahawks had any sense of trying to win and be a football team to be proud of, they would look at the history of the past Seahawks playoff runs and not listen to the players.
Here is a reminder for you fans. The Seahawks have never made the playoffs when they trained in Seattle. Never. The runs in the 80s and now all began in Cheney. That hot dry air is great to work out in. But they prefer the cool breeze and the ability to go home during training camp. From what I saw this year at training camp and the results of this season, it appears the players are running the team. Perhaps they can have valet parking at their new facility as well. We don’t want them to overwork themselves.
As for Ruskell, I remember a quote he said when the plans for the new facility were announced. He said it would be good the fans. WHAT??? How is it good for the fans Tim? What fans do you care about Tim? Are fans on the west side the only people you care about? I won’t go in to the disaster some of the decisions made at the top of the Seahawks management have been over the past year, but I will make this statement. I am disappointed in Seahawks management and I don’t appreciate what they have done to our team. They should also be ashamed of themselves for how they have treated this community.
With all that said, I still want them to beat the Bears. GO HAWKS!!

Remember, they are the SEATTLE Seahawks. Yes, it was great to have them in Spokane (Cheney) for training camp. Yes, I am disappointed that they decided to not return, but these things happen. Take some of your energy and put it into the Spokane Shock. Champions in their first year, something the Hawks have not done in 30 years.
Forever a Hawks fan

Unfortunately, the NFL is now a business out to make money and the fans don't mean squat to them except for the occasional lipservice so we keep giving them public funds for shiny new stadiums that the public can't use (you really think they'll allow, oh say, a Seattle JV HS team to play a game at Qwest Field without paying out of the nose for the privilege?) and paying for overpriced tickets. Being ashamed over how they treat fans is not part of their lexicon.

Quite frankly, I'd rather watch a high school football game, at least they are playing it because they love the game, not to make millions.
