A solid defensive effort, especially against San Francisco’s backcourt star Armando Surrant who was held scoreless, led the Zags to another home win. The visiting Dons possess some of the best natural talent and athleticism in the league, both inside and outside, but the Zags neutralized San Francisco’s attack by dominating the glass, limiting transitions baskets and for the most part not giving the Dons easy looks. Pargo did a fantastic job not giving Surrant any easy looks early in the game, and by the second half he had all but given up on the game and lost his usual aggressiveness which enables him to be one of the WCC’s leading scorers. Aside from his great defense Pargo also put pressure on San Francisco’s defense by getting into the lane and creating for himself and teammates, once again leading the Zags in assists. Jeremy still forced some plays that led to turnovers, but for now it is a tradeoff the Bulldog’s can live with because of all the positive plays he creates for the offense. Along with Pargo, Raivio and Heytvelt turned in more solid double digit performance in their customary manner. Raivio provided good outside shooting while Josh went to the basket strong tonight, including three huge dunks which really got the crowd and team going, while further frustrating the Dons. Along with the good play of Pargo, Heytvelt, and Raivio which Gonzaga needs on a nightly basis and for the most part has received all year long, Bouldin and Pendo really stepped up tonight. It was great to see Bouldin get back to being aggressive on the offensive end of the floor, and hit some three point shots tonight. Matt hit a big three in the first half, but really caught fire in a big second half run that buried the Dons, in which Bouldin hit a few threes and got to the basket for a lay-in. Pendo once again brought a huge effort that got the team going tonight, both defensively and rebounding wise. David got a bunch of deflections to disrupt the San Francisco offense and create some fast break opportunities for the Bulldogs. Coming into the year San Francisco’s natural talent was a major concern for all teams in the league and most saw them as the team most likely to challenge Gonzaga. Granted the Dons were missing one of their top players tonight, but this was a good home win for the Zags and a nice way for Gonzaga to start a very difficult five games in ten day stretch. |
