Weathering the storm...

11:30 AM Fri, Dec 15, 2006 |

Everyone in the KREM 2 Newsroom knew well in advance Friday morning was going to be very busy. However, even with planning, sometimes it takes a little luck to successfully cover a wind storm this big.

This morning, KREM 2 News was the only local TV station to provide continuous coverage of the storm from 4:30-10:00am. But a lot had to happen behind the scenes and in front of the camera to make that all happen. For starters, we put several reporters and photographers on stand-by to work early (or late, depending on their shift). Once the wind starting blowing, we already had crews in place to capture the best pictures.

We stayed busy for several hours chasing reports of downed trees and powerlines all over the Inland Northwest. Then, the storm caused a big traffic disruption right in our backyard-- or more appropriately, our parking lot.

Just after 4:00 this morning, a 50-foot cedar tree snapped in front of the KREM 2 studios, taking a powerline with it. The dangling powerline forced police to close a stretch of South Regal for several hours and we had a front row seat.

Despite our good fortune, we would not have been able to sustain coverage for so long without our hard working staff. I can't emphasize how difficult it is to stand in a wind storm for nearly six hours straight reporting, shooting video or anchoring. The same goes for members of our staff who work in the control booth, making sure everything looks smooth on-air.

Now that worst of the wind is past us, all that's left to do is clean-up, get some rest and wait for next time.
