Rough Finish Leads to Zag’s loss

11:08 PM Tue, Dec 05, 2006 |

Gonzaga played their first true road game tonight in front of a sellout crowd at Washington State and struggled down the stretch before losing to a very solid Cougar ball club. Derek and Josh both played well and Pargo was solid at points in the second half, but overall the Bulldogs lacked the balanced effort they have had most of the year and could not produce when it really counted at the end in front of a hostile crowd.

A hot start helped Gonzaga build a solid first half lead and the Zags were able to dictate the pace of the game in the first half on their way to scoring more than 40 points. Unfortunately WSU did a great job taking Derek away in the latter part of the second half by using Kyle Weaver on him and making it difficult for Raivio to shoot over the taller defender. Without Derek scoring from the outside Gonzaga was out of sync and was held to 27 second half points. After Josh scored four huge points in a row to give the Zags the lead late in the second half, the team failed to make another field goal the rest of the way, with the only point being another Heytvelt free throw as the Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 14-1 to win the game. While Gonzaga struggled to score WSU did a great job getting and converting good shots, namely two 3s by Harmling and basket plus the foul by Derek Low. The Cougars played very well and scored when it matter most, and therefore deserved this upset win over the Zags on this night.

While tonight’s ballgame is a tough loss there are some good things that can come out of the game. Hopefully the Bulldogs got a taste to what a road environment is like when you are the biggest game of the year, and the type of team unity and effort it will take to overcome the opponent’s home court advantage. This was the first time these players have had to score in a hostile arena in a close game, without being able to rely on JP or Morrison, and that can be difficult. Gonzaga will have many more difficult road tests this year, in both the WCC and at Georgia and Virginia, and hopefully the team can use this painful loss as a learning experience in these future games so they come out on top next time. The Bulldogs will not like or soon forget the feeling of the opposing crowd rushing the court after the game and this could also provide more motivation for them down the road so they do not have to go through that experience again this year.

Now Gonzaga must refocus and prepare for a motivated and talented University of Washington team on Saturday. Gonzaga needs to take care of the ball and get better shots than they got tonight in order to beat the undefeated Huskies. It will take a great team effort to get the win on Saturday night, but expect the team to come out strong together after being upset on the road and play well in front of the home crowd.

GU is back in the very weak WCC (Pepperdine RPI 220) and the local press etc. is crowing about this "win". GU ventures out of theirconference into the ACC - and they get hammered by two unranked teams. That stirred alot of interest. Who cares if they win against WCC nobodies - Loyola or Pepperdine. GU should get into a better conference - the PAC 10 would be ideal. A study done a couple of years found the best players want to play in the power conferences - they felt they had a better chance of getting into the NBA. Isn't that what its really all about in all college sports?

Unless my hearing has gone wacko (I did not get to watch the game, if it was even on TV) it was obvious that GU lost because of one glaring stat. Free throws or Costly Throws, which as near as I understood, were about 3 : 1 or more, against GU.
I'm sure I don't need to point out that GU was also playing against the Striped Shirts, which was evident by the ratio of Costly Throws mentioned above. Additionally, GU has created a big Target for themselves, (by building a winning program) coupled with possibly a more competitive Conference atmosphere, especially on the road.

It didn't help that GU went cold in the second half, either, this just added to their woes.

What more need be said?

I hope someone is as excited about GU'S coaching staff as I am especially after the past 6 ball games. WOW! Few and the boys recruited the top 1 on 5 point guard in America and enough support players to take the ball out for him. 22 points, 1 assist 5 TO'S, lost! Hmm, I wonder what stats other Point guards have running with their team? I would also like to see Few make sure that after the ball goes to Pargo from the inbounds, the other 4 do a better job of staying back on the defensive end so they could be better positioned to get him the ball again if the other team misses, especially whomever Pargo is supposed to be checking, this would allow him more time to create his own development.
