Zags exhibition game

3:41 AM Fri, Nov 03, 2006 |

Life without Adam Morrison, JP Batista, and Erroll Knight began at The Kennel last night. No big surprise.. the Zags looked a little out of sorts at the beginning of Wednesday's game against Augustana College.

Morrison and Batista accounted for almost 50 of the Zags 80 points a game last year. Derek Raivio was the only other player to score in double figures last season. So now the rest of the guys are being asked to do something they weren't expected to do the last two seasons.. score. That may sound simple.. but it will take some time to make that adjustment after feeding the ball to Morrison and Batista for 33 games in 2005-06. Coach Few doesn't expect one or two players to jump ahead of the rest. The scoring should be balanced between several players.. with anyone having the potential to lead the team in scoring on any given night. The Zags looked better as the game went on.. and the defense pressured Augustana all night.
Josh Heytvelt started at center and looked good...scoring 23 points in the 89-53 win. Heytvelt needs these games after missing most of last year with the foot injury and sitting out his redshirt year in 2004-05.
Larry Gurgainious watched the game from the bench in street clothes. The sophomore has an injured back and could be out for 4 to 6 weeks.
Freshman Matt Bouldin scored 5 points and had 2 assists in 26 minutes. The coaching staff likes the way the guard from Colorado is progressing.. but they do want him to push the pace a little more when he is playing at the point.
