An interesting discussion came up during a recent afternoon editorial meeting: how much is too much when it comes to disturbing stories of child pornography? As you've probably seen on air and on KREM.com, we've had extensive coverage of the Edmund Bergeman child pornography case in Kootenai County and the Thomas Herman plea deal in federal court. Charles Rowe stated in an afternoon editorial meeting that he felt we had "too much porn" coverage and it would difficult for families to watch. That particular day we had live reports on both Bergeman and Herman in the first five minutes of our 5:00 newscast. Charles' comment led to an interesting discussion: how much is too much when it comes to child porn cases? On one hand, both stories are full of disturbing details involving innocent victims. However, as a parent, I want to know about the people preying on our children. If you have a comment about our coverage of these child pornography investigations, feel free to email me at: cdanielle@krem.com 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

Altering a story because it may be difficult to watch?
I may be misguided, but I thought that the evening news was to bring the news of the day, no matter how it may anger or offend someone, not to provide "family friendly" entertainment for the kiddies. Your neighbors next door provide that with Sesame Street and other fine programming via PBS Kids.
As long as it doesn't border on whipping up hysteria, there is no such thing as "too much coverage" of something that is illegal and offends the sensibility of most rational adults in the community.
Your news program has to many stories on child pornography. It's a huge problem not only in the Inland Northwest, but the entire United States.
I am not saying you should omit stories of child porn out of your newscasts.. but your station does more stories than the others in Spokane. I feel your coverage on child porn is way over the top. Please try to keep in mind that after a while, we as viewers become numb to yet another child pornography story.
Your station really shines when I see you do stories on government corruption. I find those stories often times don't get told. 2005/06 was an incedible year in the Inland Northwest for news in local government. I'd like to see more coverage given to that segment.
I'm glad you have a blog on your website. But, it's not working. Maybe you should rethink how your manage your website. Viewers will tell you if they like your web content by posting replys, so far you got none.
