Standing Out

11:06 PM Wed, Nov 15, 2006 |

Every day, in every newscast, our goal is to stand out from the competition. That's not always easy when covering stories we know the other stations in town and the newspaper are all following. However, two reports during our 5:00 newscast Wednesday did just that.

By know you've probably heard about the man shot to death by a Washington State trooper in Pend Oreille County on Tuesday. One of our main goals for Wednesday was to learn more about the incident and 54-year-old Andre Laurent's past.

High praise was given to the stories by Erik Hedlund and Erik Loney during our
post-5pm newscast meeting. Erik Hedlund travelled to Hope, Idaho, where Laurent lived after his release from prison last March. The only person he found who recognized Laurent was a store clerk who sold him beer. However, the news management team was pleased we were able to add a "real person" to the story.

Also, Erik Loney did a fantastic job breaking down the police dispatch call from the short pursuit and subsequent shooting along Highway 2. Both stories helped us fulfill our mission to give viewers unique content.
