Using a quick start the Zags put away the University of Texas San Antonio early in the first half and used another late game run to extend the margin of victory to almost 40 points. Playing an overmatched and undersized team, Gonzaga put together another solid defensive and rebounding performance, while once again getting balanced scoring throughout the roster. While it is hard to judge the Bulldog’s performance in a game such as tonight’s, there were a few things that bode well for the Zags before they head to New York. Gonzaga out rebounded UTSA, a team that was plus 5 on the glass coming into the game, by over 20 rebounds and held the Roadrunners to under 50 points. Regardless of the quality of opponent, anytime Gonzaga can win the glass by such a large a margin and also limit them to less than 50 points it is a very good sign that the team is focused on the defensive end of the floor. A bright spot in tonight’s game was the chance for Will Foster to get extended playing time. Will showed his inside presence at the defensive end with a remarkable 5 blocks in the game’s final 7 minutes. While he is still raw on the offensive end of the floor, as he gets stronger and more confident Will could provide an inside player unlike anything Gonzaga has ever had before. Foster already possesses great timing when it comes to shot blocking and is rapidly improving at getting himself into better position in order to challenge shots. With more game experience and strength Will may have a chance to someday challenge the school’s record for blocks. Foster’s currently has some nice offensive tools, he just needs to develop the strength and confidence to use them in game situations, and once he does he could step up as a true low block scorer. After extending the home court winning streak and cruising in a potential trap game, the Zags can now turn their full attention to the first true test of the year, the first game in which the opponent has the talent advantage, on Wednesday night. The University of North Carolina boasts an extremely talented roster, featuring four of the country’s finest freshmen, and will give the team everything they can handle. Gonzaga must continue to play solid defense and rebound the ball well in order to be in the game, while also limiting their turnovers. It is crucial for Raivio and Mallon to provide senior leadership on Wednesday and help the team avoid a “deer in the headlights” look, something which could easily happen to a young team playing a big time opponent in the “world’s most famous arena.”
